Beach Boy Biography-anxiety disorder

Question:

Did anyone watch the Beach Boys’ special about Brian Wilson and his battle with PD/manic-depression and schizophrenia??  It was a two-hour special on the A&E channel Sunday night, and it was very interesting. He didn’t tour with the rest of the group because of his anxiety and spent 2 1/2 years in his bed….but he’s touring solo this year and has come a long way with his battle. I just found it to be an inspiration.  Anyone else?? Laura

No, I didn’t see that special, but I saw a biography on VH1 of the Beach Boys and they touched on that suject. I was surprised to learn that Brian Wilson now lives just 15 miles from me in a suburb of Chicago!! Karen

I read once that Brian Wilson had  a live-in psychiatrist for several years that went everywhere with him as a support person. I’ve often thought about that, and wondered what I would do if I had that kind of $$$. Chip  : )

Chip, it was precisely that live-in psychiatrist that *brain-washed* poor Brian and made him totally dependant on him. Brian couldn’t even make the tiniest decision about his own life without asking the doc’s advise. It was pretty sad. The doc even cut off all contact for Brian with his own family so that Brian’s family couldn’t interfere with the doc’s control over Brian. Karen

I didn’t see it but I was just curious if that lying in bed part has anything to do with the song "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies. Anyone know if they are referring to anxiety in that song?   Trey

I saw them live at a concert in 1965, and they had some very big hit songs out on the radio in those times. ("Do you wanna Dance". : )) I have several CDs of the Beach Boys’  music from the 1960’s and early 70’s. I notice now in the CD stores that Brian Wilson has some CDs of his own out in recent years. I’ve been hesitant to buy them, not because he’s not a great composer of rock music, but because his face on the cover of the CD looks as if he’s been through hell (and I know he has). I’m afraid the music might be weird or downbeat, and not like the old Beach Boys’ music that was  upbeat, and made me feel good. Have you heard any of those recent CDs of Brian, and are they any good? Take care, Chip

Response:

Chip I haven’t heard any of Brian Wilson’s new music either; although I’d be willing to buy a CD after watching that show; you would think it would HAVE to be good!  :) Laura

I saw the Beach Boys in concert back in about 1981, it was the wildest concert in my experience. They sure have a lot of great music. Sorry, don’t know about Brians new music, have only heard one single, which was good though. Ray Chip wrote I didn’t see that TV show, but I have always liked the Beach Boys’ music. Response:

Hi: I  saw it too!   It was so interesting and inspiring.  He is a muscial genius with anxiety disorder.  I swear that we people with AD are truly intelligent and very, very sensitive people that have so much to offer once we get beyond this disorder! Brian Wilson does look great now and it’s amazing that he has gone thru all of that and can now get up on stage as a solo act Lisa
