no sleep again

Question:

I got a new one tonight, you’ll have to excuse me as i ve had no sleep for two days now. Cant sleep anymore. depressed and lonely here.  On a long and lonesome highway East of Omaha You can listen to the engine moanin’ out his one note song You can think about the woman or the girl you knew the night before But your thoughts will soon be wandering the way they always do When you’re ridin’ sixteen hours and there’s nothin’ much to do And you don’t feel much like ridin’, you just wish the trip was through Here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin’ star again There I go Turn the page Well you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road And you feel the eyes upon you as you’re shakin’ off the cold You pretend it doesn’t bother you but you just want to explode Most times you can’t hear ‘em talk, other times you can All the same old cliches, "Is that a woman or a man?" And you always seem outnumbered, you don’t dare make a stand Out there in the spotlight you’re a million miles away Every ounce of energy you try to give away As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed With the echoes from the amplifiers ringin’ in your head im dead, im dead

Hi Karen, If you can sleep the night once you fall asleep, Benadryl allergy works well to get you to sleep, and has almost no side effects.  My psychiatrist suggested it. Christina

The only issue with using antihistamines …. well, there’s a couple or so. 1) they will dry you out – this can cause mild headaches, dry mouth, etc.  so if you take an antihistamine for sleep – whether you do so regularly or occasionally, be sure to get plenty of fluids as well. 2) for most people (not all by any means) tolerance to H1 blockers like benadryl builds very rapidly.  For me, within a week i become totally immune to the sleep enhancing effects of the drug. 3)  like any drug – make sure that it won’t interact with anything else you might be taking.  these meds are generally very safe – but can greatly slow down heart rate and breathing so if you are on a drug that already does this – you need to use caution. on the good side, they are typically very safe (again, given that you are not taking anything that would interact with them) and they are relatively cheap and they do not cause addiction.  Any sleep remedy can cause *dependence* but not necessarily addiction.  The two are*not*one and the same. Plus – if you have allergies – you’ve got a little added beneybecause antihistamines taken regularly work better in that regard than taken only at the onset of symptoms. there is an H1 blocker that is a prescription (at least in the US) called Hyrdoxyzine.  It is stronger than benadryl (so you take a lower dose).  it worked longer for me than benadryl did but I gradually had to increase my dose and then it stopped working.  Now I’m hypersensitive to it – If I take just one 10mg tablet I am incapacitated for at least 24 hours and usually longer with dizziness and muscle weakness.  that’s me, that’s in part one of the hazards of having an autoimmune condition – we tend to develop sensitivities to chemicals/food/inhalants rather easily. but if you have insurance and can get hydroxyzine (aka Atarax) then it can be cheaper than buying OTC benadryl.   Another BTW – Atarax is often listed as an "anti-psychotic".  This does not mean that if it’s prescribed that you are being labeled "psychotic".  It’s just such a good drug for calming people down that it has been used for this purpose a lot. it’s also given for anxiety disorder and for hives (caused by whatever).  but it’s still just a Histamine-1 blocker. H2 blockers do not have similar effects (tagamet is the only one I can think of at this time) but they don’t work for anxiety or sleeplessness either.   hth KCat – I am not a medical professional.  The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’
