SEROQUEL for neurotic (nonpsychotic) anxiety: Is this medication prescribed this way?

Question:

Marie, is that the correct Benadryl dose, or a typo?  I have not seen a 3 mg dose used before  - although it could be prepared by using 1.2 milliliters of the commercially available elixir (e.g. Benadryl Elixir from Phizer – 12.5mg./5ml.).

No, I just get a store-brand bottle (where they give you like a zillion for two bucks), snip a 25 mg capsule, then pour about an eighth of the capsule into some water. For me, that tiny bit works better than Klonopin to relieve the initial Zoloft jitters. I don’t have the jitters that much anymore, however, but the antihistamine totally calms me down–calms my thoughts too, during the day; and as a plus that tiny dose doesn’t give me the drowsies.

Response:

I have been taking Seroquel every night for about 3 years now.  I am to take it for anxiety in the day if needed.  I depend on it for sleep and I like it.

What dose are you on at night? Did you have any breathing problems while taking it?

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Some people are prescribed Seroquel, a relatively new "atypical" antipsychotic to relieve their anxiety or agitation despite the fact that they are not psychotic.  Some people seem to feel that it works well, others do not like it and do not like the way they feel after having taken even small doses (25 mgs).  I took 25 mgs two nights in a row, when I was having MAJOR problems sleeping, and it did work, but I was a little "slow" the next day, and would not care to have that be my medicine, personally.  That is me though, you might like it. I have been taking it for sleep at night, 50 mg, for about three weeks. It does a great job for me, and so far I have no complaints. It doesn’t do much for initial agitation due to Zoloft activation (a little Benadryl takes care of that, about 3 mg three times a week). I no longer need the Benadryl, as the agitation ended in a few days at my current dose.

Essentially, I would like to know if people are taking Seroquel in lieu of benzos to combat neurotic (nonpsychotic) anxiety. Yes, I know Seroquel is an antipsychotic, but I have been told by a resident p-doc that it is used "off-off-label" for p.r.n. anxiety. Can anyone share factoids with me? THANKS :) Moi

My pdoc prescribed me some a while ago. To be honest, I tried it for a bit and it made me REALLY tired all the time. Been having some bad spells lately and thought I’d give it another go. Still makes me sleepy but it does also seem to calm me down an awful lot. Not sure if its ideal because it does make me feel a little ‘drugged up’ too.

Response:

Marie, I currently take 50mg at night.  It is my main sleep aid.  I also take 1200mg of Lithium and 150mg Effexor.  I take Risperdal recently so don’t know effects, and trazadone if needed.  What do you mean by breathing broblems?

It’s hard to explain, but some folks who takes higher doses (100 mg and above) experience breath shortness (hypoventilation) a few hours after they take it, so they start gasping forcefully for air. It is not a pleasant experience. I wasn’t scared when it happened–just making sure that I was forcefully getting some air into my lungs and feeling like they were inelastic–jelly-like, and not exhaling properly either. The experience lasted four hours. Even at 75 mg, I notice the same thing, but not as much. I looked at the Net and sure enough, there are some folks who have had this problem, but apparently not all of them. Some worked their way through it and got over it (even with Risperdal), but it took them three weeks or so. Some never get through it. A person on a forum wrote that he took it four hours before bedtime, went through the procedure of hypoventilation, then went to bed. He has been doing this for three years.

Hi Marie, I’ve been taking Seroquel for well over 6 months now, and I currently have pneumonia…  but I have never had any breathing problems in the a.m. at any time.  (The heaviness in my chest right now from my illness usually bothers me in the afternoon/evening after I’ve been active all day). —
