TS IS NOTHING BUT ANXIETY

Question:

Do you believe the nerve? My Pdoc told me today that TS is nothing but an anxiety disorder, and is curable, he said that tic disorder is a seperate issue….you do not want to know what i told him, if only i could afford another doc…anyone else even heard this before??? i am so mad …christy When I saw the Neurologist that finally helped in treating my TS, he asked me "what symptoms do you need to have us work on".  By then I already knew the things about my TS that were giving me the most trouble.  My biggest problem was anxiety and some problems with OCD.  I now take Paxil and Librium and they seem to control the seratonin-dopamine imbalances in my brain.  I have a good medical support group.  I have a Neuropsychologist, Neuropharmopsychologist, and a neorologist that specializes in movement disorders.  Get a doctor’s resume – his CV to see if he/she is qualified. If they do not give it to you, change doctors.  There are a lot of doctors out there that can do more damage and make you sicker than you were when you orriginally went to see them. Fred in Denver

Response:

We had changed Drs a couple years ago.  From an expensive Dr. I trusted and was further away to a local Dr. that was less expensive.  I didn’t realize that it was the begining of what I had never experienced.  The new Dr. wasn’t familiar with TS.  As a result of her learning on our son, he ended up in a whirlwind of frustration.  Meds were screwed up, emotions haywire, and grades took a dive.  In the meantime, I searched for a new Dr.  Found a Neurologist specializing in behavior.  He has been wonderful.  A little dry around the edges, but our son loves him.  Meds are changed and back on track, self-esteem back on track and grades have gone up 2% points!  The new Dr. is probably about the same cost in that I don’t have to go as often with our son, and changing meds so often is not in the picture.  Having to give up a couple latte’s is worth the better Dr.  Believe me! >i gave him info on ts and he said he did not have time to learn about it, >he told me it was not necessary for him to learn blah blah blah, he said he >is concentrating on child psych,

If this is, indeed, what this man said, I’d wait till I was through with this medical drill, and THEN I’d write a letter to the head of the residency program. The guy’s an arrogant jerk and shouldn’t be allowed to treat kids with this kind of an attitude. Period. KAT in CT

Christy, tell the jerk that the parchment on his collecting dust gives him license to ‘practice ‘medicine NOT to "committ" medicine (ie. a bank robbery) ,as he appears to be doing! Bob

But there is not even a direct correlation to that fact, since certain kinds of anxiety – nervousness before performing onstage, for instance – never caused me any noticeable increase in ticcing. The doc is wrong, but may have casually observed this in some patients without going deeper than the surface. Shooshie

Dear Christy:   Maybe he is misinformed and is confusing TS with OCD, which does often cause anxiety, panic, and fear, as well as obsessions and intrusive thoughts, images, and desires.   OCD is a "component" of TS although not TS(which includes vocal or motor tics) itself, so maybe he just isn’t informed enough on the topic?   Could you perhaps, ask him for a referral to a doc who is more knowledgeable in the topic? — ******* IRINA SHOUSHOUNOVA bo693 or Love…@ottawa.com ******* If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.                     The word of the Lord. **************************************************************

Sounds to me like you CAN afford another doc. Spending your money to go to one who doesn’t know anything about what he is treating you for is just like throwing your money down a drain. I hope you find someone who knows what they are talking about. Vicki H.
