Constantly digging
Question:
Scruffles is just acting on instinct, even if it doesn’t make sense. One of their instincts is to cover their waste immediately and Scruffles is trying to do this and doesn’t know that she can’t. All of my cats have done this around the food dishes as well, trying to bury the leftovers for later. It doesn’t matter one iota that it isn’t working. — by permission of Molly and Casper, the wonder kitties Cats seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to ask for what they want. J.W. :Scruffles is just acting on instinct, even if it doesn’t make sense. :….It doesn’t matter one iota that it isn’t working. yeah… ever see what a d*g does? just the barest vestige of an instinct to bury remains functioning – the d*g tosses a perfunctory kick or two at his output and is ready to call it all done. — rob

This isn’t bothering us or anything but I was just wondering if anyone else had a cat with this behavior.
Scruffles, the fat and stupid one, occasionally misses the litter pan — in some cases by a room or two. I can understand her effort to cover up when she actually hits the pan, but what I have never been able to figure out is why she goes through the same motions on linoleum? She will stand there and scratch at the bare floor for several minutes, moving round and round her little gift until she is apparently content that she has done enough. Needless to say, she hasn’t done anything, but she seems to be content at a job well done. Steve Crisp

Hey Folks, Quick question: my cat Simon has a case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (I think…). He digs and digs and digs and digs… When he uses the litter, it takes him 15 minutes to "clean up". This isn’t bothering us or anything but I was just wondering if anyone else had a cat with this behavior. Irving
Meep does this too, and it does bother us as she generally does this at 3am, and scrapes the bottom of the box excessively, leaving one huge pile, and two annoyed, tired, but awake humans. But I should be thankful, as when she joined our family, she didn’t bury *at all*, the stink would flatten a horse, and the vet said, "No, you can’t train a kitten of that age to bury." Fortunately, she was wrong… as an aside, she’s being fed 50% Wiskas Veterinary Plan (UK) and 50% Iams Lamb & Rice (US) [both dry] and the smell of her piles has diminished considerably. (remove ‘nospam’ and correct aol spelling to send email) oh, and delete the m in the first name too.

Yes – one of my cats, a rescued semi-feral male also is obsessed with ‘covering up’! He will bury for ages until all the litter is heaped up in one big pile and then walk away howling. I had to get a specially deep- sided tray as the gravel would go everywhere! He also makes sure the other cats have covered up properly and finishes the job off for them more often than not.
