depression

Question:

>Is there really medicine that helps with the anxiety??

Yep. Lots of them. Try the Physicans Desk Reference and there might be some info.

Response:

In my case, I have a milder form of depression known as dysthymic disorder. It is not severe enough to be called clinical depression, and coexists with my OCD. It seems to be caused mainly by feeling hopeless with the OCD, and maybe also a lack of self-esteem. It is hard to imagine my OCD giving me enough room in my head for major depression. —

Response:

Over the course of their lives about 2/3 of people with OCD will have at least one episode of major depression. And how does that compare with those who don’t have ocd?

Response:

Although depression is very common the rate of occurance in the general population is much lower then in people with OCD. Overall, about 15% of people will have an episode of major depression in their lifetime. Regards, John

Many people with OCD have depression. Some say that they feel the depression was brought on in part by their inability to control OCD — but others see them as simply two mental illnesses that often appear together. Many people with OCD have anxiety around their obsessions and compulsions, but they might not be anxious people in gnereal, just when fearful or frightening obsessions are strong.Feelinings of inferiority or sinfullness or failure are just some of the many types of obsessive thought OCD can give rise to. catherine yronwode Comics Warehouse: http://www.luckymojo.com/comicswarehouse.html

The categories of science are neat and mutually exclusive. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association which is used to classify and diagnose people with diverse mental illness, a diagnosis of one disorder precludes a diagnosis of another. In the world of real life categories overlap, and persons can suffer from generalized anxiety, specific phobias, depression, ocd and trichotillomania simultaneously in any combination. If you visit an ignorant rigid mental health professional they will want to pigeon hole you according to the DSM, and if you want insurance reimbursement for mental health care they will have to. But if you find a saavy mental health professional they will seek to gain a general impression of the totality of problems you are experiencing. They will recognize the overlap which often occurs in symptoms. Certainly, ocd is now classified as a kind of anxiety disorder, so the presence of obsessions and compulsions does not preclude others ways in which anxiety might manifest. Depressions is considered an affective or mood disorder, different in nature and attributes from anxiety disorders. But is it? Does everybody have to fit into little rigid categories. I have suffered from combined depression, generalized anxiety, obsessions, compulsions, trichotillimania or hair pulling, and specific phobias in various combinations episodically for ten years. And I am sure others have their own combination problems too. So do not feel alone, and pity the poor professional who is forced in their own mind to reduce your experience to something inappropriately simple. Rich, RN, MDiv, MLS

We dont know exactly what causes OCD but the reseach seems to suggest most people who develop OCD have a genetic trait that predisposes them to this. About 2/3 of people with OCD will have an episode of major depression in their life time which is a very high rate. The problems seem related. As you may know the drugs that are first line treatments for ODC are antidepressants another possible link. OCD is considered an anxiety disorder and often has other anxiety symptoms as part of the picture.         It has been my experience that anxiety and fear cause my OCD and also that when I was unable to put aside the obsessive compulsive behavior, this inability  led to depression.  My doctor has prescribed klonopin for the anxiety and zoloft for the ocd and depression.  This combination has been working for me quite well. — Best wishes, Leonard Cornelius

That’s a tricky one. Does OCD cause depression or does depression cause OCD? Does anxiety cause OCD or does OCD cause anxiety. Judging from how many OCD people refuse to use real email address’s and/or tell their family they have OCD, it definitely cause inferiority….
