– Our late cat, Spitfire, always liked to play these games. Even though he was in his late teens, he still was a force to be reckoned with shen making the bed. We sometimes did make him into the bed, even under the fitted sheet. He’d curl up, then dash around, then slip out, down onto the floor, and jump back in for the next layer. He seemed to like that as part of the game. — This has been Mark and/or Mary Shannon History manages to get away with cliches no novelist could.

Both of mine do. They love to chase the rippling sheets when I’m trying to change the bed. I don’t think they’d mind if I made the bed with them, until they got bored with the game.

Kelly sulks when we make the bed, let alone change the sheets. I can just read her mind – she’s spent three hours carefully arranging everything into a state of disorganised cat-chaos, and we come along and RUIN it! Tasha, on the other hand, thinks under-the-sheet is a Seriously Cool Place. One morning we actually tucked the fitted sheet over her. We then spent 3/4 hour in hysterics as she oozed all over the bed like a furry flatworm. Every now and again we’d lift an edge and call "Tashi! This way’s out!" – and she’d stick one darky furry face out, quick look, rapid flatworm reversal off to another corner – and more blissful fun ozzing around under the sheet. In the end we had to leave, so we lifted her out. Maryanne

Gremlin, too, has a pesky tendency to get right the exact geometrical center of the bed and lie down while I’m attempting to put the sheets on. One time, no amount of cajoling or threats would get him off the mattress. So, I just tossed the fitted sheet over his fat little body and made the bed with the lump in there. He stayed in there for about 10 minutes before becoming scared and nearly ripping the sheets attempting to get out. Strangely, he’s not done it much since then, other than the occasional game of Phantom-Cat.
Baby Girl thinks that bedmaking time is just an excuse for "Toss the Cat". She jumps on the bed, looks at me expectantly, and I pick her up and spill her to the floor. Repeat ad infinitum, or until I collapse, giggling, on the yet-unmade bed to give her a fierce "woody-woodying" (read:tickle her furry tummy). The only way to actually end the game is bathroom, and sneak the door shut on her. Now, tell me more about this Phantom-Cat game…… Liz | Elizabeth H. She jumps right under the cover as soon as any sheet touches the bed and stays there until we play with her. I pretend I’m trying to get the lumps out of the sheets and she swats my hands. She can play for as long as a half hour, so maybe I’ll try the kitty treat idea. She has always been able to get herself out from even fitted sheets and greatly looks forward to this game. As a matter of fact she will burrow down under blankets and pillows in an already made up bed to sleep, when the desire takes over. — Karen Amann Talerico

Hee hee! Silverfish does this. She comes running when I start slapping the sheets around, leaps into the middle of the bed and chases phantoms wildly. I just put the fitted sheet right over her, and then we have a game of "smooth the lump" where I gently but firmly try to smooth out the "inexplicable" lump in my bed — she *loves* it. Eventually she wriggles out, jumps off the bed, races around the room, then jumps in the middle of the bed again, poised for the flat sheet and a repeat! They’re so weird! Tama

Tati has been made into the bed several times. I can’t get the fitted sheet on over her, though, so she’s safe from that. After I get that one on, though, I don’t bother kicking her out. One day I came home to find a Tatiana-sized lump in the freshly made bed. I was quite confused because all the edges were tucked in and I was SURE she hadn’t been there when I left in the morning. I pulled her out and remade the bed and a few minutes later I spotted her wriggling her way back under in between the pillows. I guess she just wanted to be wrapped up tight that day! Kimberly

I wouldn’t call what he does helping in any way! He’s usually already on the bed when I go to take the blankets off and I’ll be damned if he’ll move. I pull on the blankets and he just rolls with it…over and over! He gets the hint by the time I get to the mattress pad! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – : OCS (Obligatory Cat Story) This morning while making my bed, Eveready : decides the billowing sheets make great places to hide! My cat has always run from corner to corner, chasing down the sheet as I make the bed, and I’ve never walked away from the task in the last 3 1/2 years (since she was 8 weeks old) without making my cat into the bed. She then spends the next few minutes scooting her way out, and I have to go back and straighten up a bit. This is our favorite game! And she’s a good helper! Cat Parsons

I had one cat that would hang around as my husband and I folded the sheets. He loved to get in there and be swung back and forth. Sarah. <snip Anyone else have cats who "help" make the bed?
I have an orange tabby longhair named Chip. He loves to get under the sheets when I make the bed and attack my hands every time I try to straighten the covers. He usually wins. I leave the bed until he decides to find someplace else to lie. Florence

My Miss Kitty absolutely loves helping with bed making and the unmaking. She jumps on top with her tail lashing and ears flat and spreads out. As I pull the sheets off – she rides the blankets as they fall off the bed. Then she jumps back up on top of the billowing sheet and crawls all around under the fitted sheet. It’s quite hilarious but not very condusive to getting the job done quickly. It never fails! Debby

Simba regularly helps with bedmaking duties. All he needs to hear is the rustle of the sheets and he comes running. He loves to be made into the bed, but then seems confused when he tries to find his way out. He especially loves to attack the ends of the pillowcases when I’m trying to do the pillows. Deb

i haven’t tried having my kitty make the bed with me but, after i get off of here i am going to try it and i will let you all know what happens. we know that she doesn’t like being caught under the heavy comforter as it is too bulky. sorry, to change the thread a little bit here, you can surely return to it. i just wanted to tell everybody where little piglet stuck herself the other day. my hubby and i have separate built in closets side by side and he threw a pair of his dirty uniform pants in there. i found piglet nose deep in the crotch of the pants, chewing on the pockets with a dreamy look in her eyes. my son called her a slut. i just laughed. she is too young to go into heat but i guess we already know she’s boy crazy! ha! nan and piglet: who wears the pants in the family

I’m confused about my Cheech’s bed making ‘help’. She’s sometimes in the way, and like the previous poster, if she’s above the top sheet, I’ll let her be and finish making the bed. The weird thing she does though, is once the bed is made, she MUST (She’s obsessive compulsive, I think!) get under the part where the sheets abd blankets are folded back (near the pillows) She gets her body – head first – half way under the covers and proceeds to attempt to ‘dig’ through the top sheet. Usually I can distract her by playing ‘fight the moving comforter’ with her. Otherwise, she’ll do it until I leave the room and she has no audience. What’s with that?
