Collecting Disability
Question:
I am wondering how i go about collecting disablitity for OCD? I know zero on the subject, so any info would help.. thanks Kel Her head is in a bitter way. Her brain’s on fire. She’s just looking for the perfect wave. It’s her brain’s desire.

Hi Kel, I am on disability for manic-depression, so I don’t know what you have to do for OCD. However, in my case it was VERY important to have a psychiatrist who was 100% supportive. The process is long…I think my initial claim took up to six months to clear. There are very detailed forms to fill out — work history, any hospitalizations, they even ask how often you go out with friends and do household tasks. As Scott said, it takes persistence — don’t give up! People with mental disabilities are as deserving as those with physical ones. We are expected to suffer the slings and arrows of stigma and the disability itself, but when we ask for a little help getting by some people make it hard… including the bureaucrats at Social Security. I would get the support of a psychiatrist (NOT just a therapist or social worker) first, then go to the social security office for the initial sign-up. Good luck to you, and don’t let the turkeys get you down (apropos this time of year, hehe). Jessica

Kel, Forgot to add you need to know whether you are applying for S.S.I. or S.S.D.I. lf you haven’t worked much, you may have to apply for S.S.I. I forget the requirements for S.S.D.I., but you get that if you’ve worked a certain amount in the last 8 or 10 years. S.S.D.I. is a better deal since there are less restrictions on it, such as other income. There should be booklets on these at the Social Security office, maybe you’d want to look over these before applying. Again, good luck! Jessica

Kel I have applied for social security disability in th U.S. I went to the social security office with an appointment and necessary papers were filled out. Paperwork from your psychiatrist, counselor, etc. also need to have your signature to release information to social security. A lot of information about yourself of why you cannot work is to be documented. (Make a copy for yourself). Reference persons (3) need to be named. Seven years of not working is a basis for disability. I have been denied two times and appealed one time. I have sixty days to appeal. I hope my attorney can take care of it. If won, he will receive 25% back pay (when first applied). I wonder if I have the capability to be consistent and dependable to take on part-time. Nancy Kel <solemna…@aol.comzsdghd> wrote in message

Yes, you will most likely be turned down the first couple of tries (I was initially, and so were some of my friends.) But we all just reapplied until they gave in. If you have some written statements from your docs and therapists stating that your illness makes it very difficult to work, then you should definately be able to get disability. They just hate to part with that money, but if you need the assistance, then push them!
