Cara- Yes, OCD can definitely wax and wane. Some people have chronic form of it (ie troublesome thoughts, rituals EVERY day) for others it runs a more episodic course. It also be aggravated by stress and other factors. It is a chronic disorder and most people who have it have it for life, but it is definitely NOT progressive. It can be stabilized by meds and/or CBT. = -jon I’m a freshman in college and studying obsessive compulslive and related disorders. I do not have ocd myself but desire to learn more i hope to be a ocd therapist someday, and chatting with people who have it will help me understand better.

Response:

Not progressive but usually waxes and wanes with a lot of people. Some people have to deal with it-but manage it-on a daily basis.  Looking back at how it has been with you over a period of time is a good indication of how you will have to deal w/OCD during your life.

Response:

Hi Cara, I’m not aware of OCD being progressive.  I do know that it is cyclic, with flare ups now and then.  But eveyone is different as far as that goes.  I have found the cognitive behavior therapy to be my second best line of defense against flare ups.  What are you using meds-wise and therapy-wise? God bless you and give you relief, Kristi

You’ll be fine. That is happening to me right now!! Just don’t do anything stupid like I did. Samira Rose

Mine gets awfull when i am stressed or nervous about exams and stuff like that. When it first started it was as bad as it have ever been. I was actually better when i sought help than i was at 16. Right now its not so good cuz im terribly nervous about all the new stuff that is happening to me because i did seek help. When i am really bad i sometimes wish that i hadnt. I also had a long period of time where i was practically free of symphtoms. I checked a little more than the average person and i still couldnt help myself with my taking my cigarettes with me but other than that i was great. Something like that i could live with. I hope this clears it up for you. Its perfectly normal for me at least to have better and worse periods and the way i live my life somehow influences the outcome. Kind regards Sussan

Cara, I think OCD at its worst, is when it takes up most or all of your time.  One thing I know with my own OCD, is when I first started noticing symptoms at age 19 it was only once and a while.  As time went on, my OCD got worse. Every year that passed my depression and OCD took up more and more of my time.  The thoughts also got more intense.  It wasn’t until I received treatment, (medication) then I started getting better.  I’m wondering if I got treatment earlier, maybe my OCD would have never gotten to the point it got. Does OCD get worse?  Does it "flare up" at times and then just "calm down?"  I am at the worst I’ve ever been.  I’d hate to think that if I’m this messed up now what I will be like in 10 or 20 years.   Cara

Response:

Hi Cara, It flares up in me when I’m anxious. I found that OCD got progressively worse in me with time, but with CBT and medication, I feel like I’ve stepped back about 10 years to where I can manage it.
