Hi Simon, Are you confusing Dr. Jenike with Dr. Claiborn? I remember Dr. Claiborn posting in this newsgroup, but not Dr. Jenike. Kind regards, Steve ~ http://www.mybookmarks.com/public/Steve_George ~ steph…@georgeharris.freeserve.co.uk ~ Fax & Voicemail: (+44) 0704 470 0528

Hi Steve – no, I subscribed to the OCD-L mailing list for a while (which is where he resides). — simon

Response:

Hi Dan! Er I mean Chris!! Hee Hee The show said you left after 2.5 weeks and that you did not graduate right? They said they could not help you much because you did not have the bags with you during your stay and could not help you that much on the spot? Anyway…You are right I do not think they were appropriately staffed and lacked some real knowledge of what OCD sufferers go through. Alot are clueless. Good therapists are ones who have OCD themselves in my opinion. I was wondering that myself..about the contact numbers and where to get help for your OCD..that is pretty much normal standards. I am glad you aired that piece of your fears. You helped support alot of OCD sufferers. Aimee :-) Chris Strobel <strob…@webtv.net> wrote in message

I’ve been urging caution with this group of "experts" for a long, long time. They are the "gurus" of the "meds and bt" mantra crowd. — Take care of your "self". whatatrip rbol…@premier1.net

Chris, I just finished watching. Great Job! Hope someone will be helped by the show. I feel so sorry for the woman in the show. Take care, Annmari4e The brown eyed lady

Response:

Chris I see they called you "Dan" on the show. What liars they were, saying you "asked them" to not show your face and so forth!!! Sheesh!!! I love it!! That little pipsqueak, Lee Baer, didn’t make on screen. He is on the cutting room floor!!! LOL!!! They claimed a 70% success rate. I doubt that very much. Two of the three people they focused on (you, that poor woman with germ fears and the guy who shaved and showered too much),"failed" the course or did not "graduate". That is a 33% success rate. very interesting, though. I can see how the "staff", like you claimed, really run that place. theyare young, 20 something kids and not educated ot xperienced clinicians. I bet those young punks are very bossy, too!! Good luck to you and I am 100% sure, abolutely no one you know, has any idea that it was you on there. take care, Tom L.

Hi Tom and everyone, Actually my attorney asked ABC to cover my identity completely (I feel sorry for all the Dan Morgans out there ;-) Everything else your referring to is pretty much right on.You could see the kids in the piece, and yes about 90% were very arrogant.Baer as well as Baney should change occupations IMHO of course. The concept of the OCD institute is a solid one I think, just very poorly staffed I’m sorry to say (again IMHO) By the way, did anyone hear ABC say where anyone who thinks they might have OCD could contact for more information?I didn’t, no phone numbers, no websites, no addresses.Bummer :-( Sincerely, Dan Morgan……..ehh I mean Chris ;-)

Response:

Chris, you did *great*!! You managed to go across the country to at least try something to help yourself. About a year ago, I heard of a program that seemed to be for my type of OCD/BDD. Sent off for info & flipped when I saw it was a 30- day program. My OCD had/has been bad & I’ve occassionally only been able to barely get thru about 2 days before I "gotta do it" — go without for 30 days?? But *you* went to a program for help! Bravo! It was interesting but not surprising you didn’t show the signs. There was a long time when my OCD was still fairly controlable – I could cover or supress it long enough to get through a public situation before it was back to the same mess. Don’t worry… just a natural self protection mechanism kicked in. You weren’t quite ready to come out of the OCD closet. No biggie. I know you are (I know *I* am), but try not to be overly embarassed about the details of your OCD. I felt for *you* & the others they showed yesterday, as well as & the ones on the previous 20/20 OCD program. I *felt* because I *understood* since I’m in the same dern boat… albeit the opposite end of the craft since I wouldn’t want to trigger the "washers" with what I do. Unfortunately, we will all suffer embarassement until more & more people learn about OCD & its sorry ick affects. Your lawyer must have done a good job, but give *yourself* credit for standing up & displaying your boundaries! Without people like you willing to step forward, they wouldn’t have a show. I noticed at the beginning the guy commented you "*insisted*" on not using your real name, etc. What a cad — a caloused, uneducated (about OCD) reporter — not your problem. Got my husband to watch last night, too. He immediately wanted to know if I caught where this place was! HA! Thanks for your insight — I’ll check elsewhere if I can get up enought gumption & if insurance covers it, etc. Besides, I wasn’t too crazy about their theraputic (?!) method. Overall, 20/20 didn’t do too bad with the show but it could have been better… which only comes with more knowledge. At least they are broaching the waters to talk about this mess. Way to go, Chris — and *thanks*, ~~~Octavia ================ – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -strob…@webtv.net (Chris Strobel) wrote: > Hi Tom and everyone, > Actually my attorney asked ABC to cover my identity completely (I feel > sorry for all the Dan Morgans out there ;-) Everything else your > referring to is pretty much right on.You could see the kids in the > piece, and yes about 90% were very arrogant.Baer as well as Baney should > change occupations IMHO of course. The concept of the OCD institute is a > solid one I think, just very poorly staffed I’m sorry to say (again > IMHO) By the way, did anyone hear ABC say where anyone who thinks they > might have OCD could contact for more information?I didn’t, no phone > numbers, no websites, no addresses.Bummer :-( > Sincerely, > Dan Morgan……..ehh I mean Chris ;-)

BTW, what was your reaction to the LAST time 20/20 did an OCD show, only TWO MONTHS AGO?  (mostly on harming obsessions)  or 4.5 MONTHS AGO?  (hoarding)

Response:

Thanks for all the support everyone and your kind emails and post. I found an attorney who thought this was a good case, and decided to handle this on a contingency basis. After going round and round with ABC’s attorneys, he  finally got ABC to cover my face, change my voice, and change my name.Guess they figured the cost of litigating a 1st amendment case wasn’t worth blowing my anonymity.I’m still on the show, and in fact have been on the 20/20 ad trailers all day today (very freaky) I’m the guy with the baggies on my hands. You know, it wouldn’t be so bad if the OCD institute was a well run organization, but unfortunately its not, and I feel bad for representing it.I wouldn’t recommend my worse enemy go there for treatment of OCD!Its not run by doctors, but Its run by kids with lack of schooling, proper training, and lack of people skills. In 17 days I saw Dr. Jenike twice, and Dr. Baer three times (one of which was for ABC) These guys don’t even practice whats in their own books! This is not only my opinion, but that of many warm, bright people I met there. If you’re even remotely considering a stay at the OCD institute I urge you to proceed with caution, and check out some of the other programs in the country like UCLA.Thanks again to all of you…..Chris

Response:

Chris, I am shocked and dismayed you got big, bad ABC NEWS to make those changes!!! Congrats to you!!! You should feel very proud of your self!! You took on a major corporation and , in my eyes, WON!!!! Feel VERY good about that!! I applied to and was accepted o the OCD Insitute this past Novenmber but Zi tiurned them down. (1) I couldn’t stand the thought I would be an in-atient at a psychiatric hospital and (2) I didn’t feel, in my heart of hearts, that they could help me. I had written many times to Diane Baney and he answerd al my questions. The emphasis on group therapy realy turned me off because I know how porly I do in groups (see others opinions of me on here and n rel support groups!!), didn’t care for the preparing, eating and cleaning all meals together and didn’t care for the sleeping arrangements and bathroom arrangements (locked doors for germ phobes). I also know one of the shrinks there.  I saw her in the summer of ‘92. her name is lesliue Shapiro. What did you think of her? I thought jenike was the diretor and did not expect o see him for therapy at all. Also, you are the second person to write or speak negatively about Lee Baer. the other guy wanted to go back to the OCD Clnic at Mass general, where he also works, and ounchhim out!!!! lastly, I was very concerned about the "staff". I heard they were "20 somethings" with just BA’s or BS’s. That they were "trained". I knew (I am 41) that I would have no respect for these "kids" and was afraid I might get into a major verbal/physical confrontation with some unknowledgable punk who thought he/she was in control. You have made me feel better about my decision. You also made a poster on here, named Stephen "BOY" George, from England, look like a total moron and ass because he repeatedly criticized me for not going to a hospital and program he knew nothing about!!! He even wrote that "you blew it". Just shows my sage advice to others about NEVER taking others advice on anything and only listeing to yourself pays off.   Thanks again and good luck!!! Tom Luby PS Is that you, stevie, wiping the egg off your face??!!! LOL!! LOL!!!!!

Response:

Chris, I’m really happy for you. I’ll be looking for the plastic bags! I know what you mean about they don’t practice what they write. I was in the OCD research unit for 11 days. Dr. Charney who was there at the time was Satan himself! They will manipulate everything you do or say. I got out of there as fast as I could. Take Care, Annmarie The brown eyed lady

Chris, I don’t know why I didn’t see your orginal post. I only saw one of the responses to it where your post was quoted.  It must be stupid AOL acting up again. It is terrible that ABC went against your wishes and also how you were treated by the OCD institution.  There are heartless people in this world but what annoys me most is when they are in the mental health care field or any type of health care field. What’s done is done.. so now try to hold your head up high and think of all the people you will be helping.  20/20 generally does good informative shows so I’m sure it will be done in good taste.  Even if it isn’t (which I doubt) you did a very brave thing by letting them tape you..be proud not ashamed. But I do understand why you would feel embarrassed or ashamed…. there is NO reason to be, millions of people have OCD and I bet there are even more who have it but hide it. If I told you all the silly rituals I did and I still do some of them, you’d have a good chuckle. But I also realize mine aren’t being broadcasted on TV. You are helping to inform people about what OCD is and also helping people who can relate not feel so alone. You’ll see, it will turn out fine.  I’m going to watch and support you as I’m sure everyone in the group will also. Hey guys..we know a celebrity!  Chris..I want the first autograph..:). Response:

Hi Chris- I wrote to Sara about airing the show on your behalf. I told her I thought it was insensitive and not morally right. I can see your point of view. It is unfortunate that they can not experience OCD and be in your shoes. I know it sux that Diane Baney tricked you into doing the segment and saying later that you could change your mind. Did you sign a contract with her stating that? If not than I guess you lose since it was not written in writing.  People in their business know the tricks of the trade. I have learned not to trust alot of people because of getting screwed over and over again. I have a big TRUST problem. But I think this is beyond your control now since they did go through the time to video tape you, etc..But they are in the business and out to produce publicity on OCD and how miserable it can be to live with OCD. I mean I would try to look on the bright side of things. Please do not feel ashamed and embarrassed over this. There are millions of OCD victims who experience the same things or worse. I myself think it is terrific that you agreed to do the 20/20 segment and am looking forward to viewing it. Think of it as a good Samaritan act. Aimee :-) <cloudswim…@webtv.net> wrote in message

Response:

Perhaps you, Chris, could do a revenge interview on another network newsmagazine or talk show to explain your side of the story and show proof that since that taping you are doing a better. Maybe Oprah, Leeza, or FOX News?   Avoid "Roseanne," though; she’ll make you out to be as "independently freaky" as her.

Response:

Chris,    After reading your post regarding the 20/20 show, I felt compelled to respond since I was on TV several times in 1988 as a guest on several talk shows.   The first one I did was the Sally Jesse Raphael Show that July. Two days before the taping, Patty Perkins from the then-OCD Foundation called and asked if I was willing to do the show, since they needed a male to be on the guest panel.    After thinking about it for about five minutes, I thought I’d give it a shot, and called Patty back and told her I would do it. Although I was not filmed actually in the process of my compulsions on film as you were, I was nonetheless subjected to several asinine comments from some of the audience members (prior to taping, that is), many of which were from my hometown, because that’s where the show was based at the time.    Briefly, it was a kind of cathartic experience for me though, since I thought to myself "I really don’t have to hide this any more," and turned out to be beneficial to me in the long run.    With regard to your experience, one thing you have to realize is that you are looked upon as some kind of carnival freak by producers and stuff (they just don’t tell you that, though) — anyway you would like to think it can be done "tastefully," but most of the time is not, because they have to sell their advertising time, etc.    Without rambling any more than I just did, my straight opinion of your personal situation is as follows: #1 First, you have to accept the fact that you originally agreed to do the show in the first place, and that once you were filmed on tape, that footage became (and still is) theirs — not yours. Unfortunately, you really have no say at all as far as editing goes (whatever they leave in or leave out), because, the fact is, they don’t care what you think anyway. You served their purpose by showing up, and you probably did a great job, but the fact is it’s too late to do anything about that now. #2 The attitude I think you’re going to have to take is that if one person — just one person — is watching TV that night and can relate to your symptoms and the way they manifest themselves, and then go seek the proper help, I’d say you’ve done your job and done it well. Fortunately, 20/20 is no Jerry Springer or Inside Edition show, and I’ve personally never seen them do much of a hatchet job (yet, at least) on anything regarding the most basic aspects of mental illness. #3 You’re probably most worried about if people in your home town will recognize you exposing the facets of your illness, and what they will think, say, do, etc. Maybe you will be ridiculed, maybe you won’t, so try to just get through the airing, because I really don’t believe that even if 10,000 people e-mailed the producer on your behalf, it would change anything at this stage of the game. You can’t expect people who are in a business with no heart to suddenly develop one — that’s how they got to where they are in the first place!    So take care, and know that me and my wife (Annmarie) are here to talk to about this by e-mail anytime, and will be watching on February 3rd.  Sincerely, Michael B.

Response:

Chris, Unfortunately, you had agreed and you allowed them to videotape you, so the best thing to do is just know that you are helping millions of people to see OCD and this will only help others to know what OCD’ers go through. It takes a lot of time to produce the 20/20 segments and they generally do a good job.  I was involved in some research on a subject in a show they were doing one time.  I tried to get hold of the producer about two weeks before the airing of a segment and found out that it was "in the can" and nothing could be changed.  So, your segment has been ready for a while, I am sure.  They are not going to change it if every one of us here sends ABC a message.  They are busy working on another show, and another, etc.  That is their business.  That is how they earn their living. Do you recall signing a release?  Even if you did not, a verbal agreement probably constitutes a legal contract in Mass. I am sure that Pete Rose and many other people are sorry they allowed interviews on television, but there is nothing you can do legally.  Once you agree to go on camera, that is it.  I have been on television and radio a number of times and there were things I wish would have been edited out or that I had combed my hair or whatever. Hey, there is nothing to be ashamed of.  If everyone wore Baggies on their hands for just one day, imagine how we could cut down on the spread of infections. Hang in there.  This could be your ticket to other shows on which you could talk about how you feel better, etc.  You can go on your local tv and radio shows and discuss OCD.  This would help all of us because most people do not understand what OCD is. Chris, What I’m curious about is why they would want to use someone who is symptom free when far away from home. That seems most odd to me. Why wouldn’t they want someone with rather severe OCD (having symtoms {and lots of them} at least most of the time). What are they pushing on this show. A particular drug? Or behavioral theapy?? This whole thing sounds like so much BS to me and a way for someone or a group of "someones" to make money! * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

This Thursday ABC 20/20 will be airing a show on the OCD institute in Belmont MA.They are using embarrassing footage of me and my rituals shot in my home, car, and at the Institute. They are using this footage completely against my wishes.I told them last year the day after I flew 2000 miles to get there and get help, that I changed my mind and didn’t want to be part of the show since ALL my symptoms had become asymptomatic, and the OCD clinic said they couldn’t help me.ABC and specifically producer Sara Holmberg doesn’t care about peoples feelings, they are saying I’m too "valuable" to edit out of the piece despite my pleas to do so.When I agreed to let 20/20 come and tape me it was because the OCD institutes program manager Diane Baney said "you can say yes to 20/20 now and change your mind latter if you want" well she lied, and even chewed me out along with Dr. Lee Baer saying "we would never have had you come here had we known you wouldn’t have any symptoms" this after I had Repeatedly told her many times on the phone, before going, that I’m usually free of symptoms when I’m far away from home. She told me several times that I should come anyways, that "it would be getting my foot in the door" well after they all found out I said no to 20/20 they were very mean to me, and I left there in tears with no connections for help near home, no nothing.
