OCD with its own mind
Question:
I have ocd and depresion and some other things. My doctor told me he was thinking about haveing me do one of those mental evaluations at a hospital, which works for alot of people. Now the ocd is backing off. Its done this before, but then it just comes back causeing different things to happen. Its almost as if it can tell that if it goes through that then it may be stopped. Has anyone had this happen? If it backs off enough should i not go through with the evaluation?
Response:
I can’t say whether you should go through with the evaluation or not, but I can tell you (from nearly 30 years of experience having OCD) that OCD doesn’t go away. You may find yourself in "remission" periodically, but it will keep coming back — often with different manifestations. Consequently, there’s a good chance you’ll need to have some treatment at some point, so maybe having the eval would be good preparation. Anyway, good luck. This is a tough disease to battle, but nowadays there’s lots of support to help in the battle. Lots of good websites, books, physicians who understand the disease, etc. KimJ

Hello! This is the first time I’ve tried to communicate with a newsgroup-I’m brand new at using a computer. My reason for writing is that about 15 years ago I suffered horribly from OCD-to the point where suicide seemed the only answer. No one new anything about meds back then. Happily, I was put on a "study" for Anafranil and had a miraculous result! For many years my symptoms were under control to the point where I felt I was "cured". Now, suddenly, the past month or two they are back full-fledged! Once again, I am suffering day and night with my thoughts, fears, anxieties, and you know what all. I have an appt with the MD tomorrow a.m., and I pray that Anafranil will work again. This is just to reconfirm what you said about ocd returning. Now I know, there is never a "cure", but with medication there is hope. Thanks, Kim, for giving me reason to communicate with you all! Suze

I ran across 35 pages of research abstracts on OCD on the web and among them was a report on a large study of the persistence of OD over the course of peoples’ lives. most of the folks with OCD reported having had major depression at least one time in their lives. A bunch reported that OCD started bad and gradually improved, and about the same amount reported it started out mild and gradually got worse. But most reported that it came and went all their lives. These people were not on SSRIs for most of their lioves, since SSRIs were not in juse all that many years ago. What makes OCD wax and wane regardless of medication? It is most likely related to other factors that mediate the amount of serotonin in the brain. These include good diet (high in C, B-6, and omega fatty acids), exercise, exposure to sunlight, good sleep haits, and lack of stress on the positive side — and poor diet (low in C, B-6, and omega fatty acids), lack of exercse, lack of exposure to sunlight, poor sleep haits, and stress on the negative side. catherine yronwode The Lucky Mojo Curio Co. http://www.luckymojo.com alt.lucky.w – the newsgroup of synchronicity, amulets, and talismans Lucky W Amulet Archive: http://www.luckymojo.com/LuckyW.html The Sacred Landscape: http://www.luckymojo.com/sacredland.html Karezza and Tantra: http://www.luckymojo.com/sacredsex.html Freemasonry for Women: http://www.luckymojo.com/CoMasonry.html
