strange…..sounds likeyou just described my life in a nutshell……….i stumbled across this newsgroup in my search for why i mutilate my body constantly……….it varies from carving  up my arms or legs with a knife , to a routine of exercise i need to do each day……..i could make a list a mile long of the things i’ve wasted so much time on. currently, my "thing" is picking at my skin all over my body……… i don’t want to, and i’m sick of the questions about all my sores…….but i don’t know how to stop…….AAAGGGHHH!! i can’t anwser  if  of this behavior is ocd related…… all i know is that it is incredibly irritating and i hate it. but still i find myself with blisters up my arms because i did’nt think the plates at work were THAT hot….hell, i kind of liked the pain. hmmm…just my 2 cents mel

I did believe slef-mutilation was mostly linked to borderline disorder or depression but maybe it is related to OCD as well. I’m interested in finding out. I don’t self-mutilate myself, but I do have obsessions about doing it, sometimes, Cec lori7…@my-dejanews.com wrote in message

Actually, self-injury is linked to many different mental disorders, including OCD.  Skin picking, nail biting, mouth and lip biting, and hair pulling seem to be the most common forms of self-injury that correlate with OCD.  Many people, including health care providers, think that if a person self-injures, he or she automatically has borderline personality disorder, but that isn’t true.          Jennifer P.S.  Here is an excellent link to my friend’s webpage about self-injury: http://crystal.palace.net/~llama/psych/injury.html

Another reference I forgot to mention is the book The Scarred Soul by Tracy Alderman.  It was really helpful for me and lead me on the path to discovering that a lot of my self-injury (the term I and a lot of other people who self-injure use because it’s much less harsh than self-mutilation, and we really aren’t mutilating ourselves- despite what others might think) is OCD related.  So now I have to learn to control my OCD to control my skin picking.       Jennifer

Hi, Yes, my son did this for a bit when he was 12/13 years old.  Once we got his medication dosage worked out it hasn’t happened since.  He’s 14 now.  He says he did it because the pain he caused to his arms made the pain in his head go away for a little while. I haven’t experienced it, but give the meds time to work out. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -frednj…@worldnet.att.net wrote: > Hi, > I’m new to this newsgroup.  I was recently diagnosed with OCD and put on > Luvox.  I’m wondering if anyone has experienced obsessions to cut > themselves, and if so, have you acted out on the obsession?  Or, do you know > anyone with OCD who has experienced this? > Juliann

Response:

Juliann, I was diagnosed with OCD inOctober.  Since then my symptoms have gotten increasingly worse and I have cut myself many times.  I’m not sure how it goes in your head, but in mine I know I am cutting myself but it is as if I am just watching helplessly on a screen what I am doing to myself.  Each cut is "not deep enough" or the blood "not dark enough".  I had to be taken off a train because of it , was kicked out of my home because my roomates did not understand, and my parents don’t understand either so all they do is yell.  I lost my Meds (Paxil) in OR and I am in MI.  They weren’t working anyway, I had just been jumped up to 60 mg. I do act mine out, but don’t let it get that far if you haven’t already.  There are so many times I will ball up in a room full of people, too scared to go into a room on mine own for fear that I will find something – anything- to cut myself with. I’ve done it on toilet paper dispensers in a grocery store, used  keys, dull pocket knives, bottle caps, even sharp rocks.. If you need to talk, and I know how hard it is to talk about it when it is happening, you can email me, or find me online.  You can even call, I’ll give you my number if I trust ya’ <wink> but I know how it is to have no one. Hiya Juliann, I have never self injured but there are many people here that have – what you describe is not uncommon. There is help and support out there. Others will likely give you more details. Also try alt.support.self-harm … it might help too. frednj…@worldnet.att.net wrote: > Hi, > I’m new to this newsgroup.  I was recently diagnosed with OCD and put on > Luvox.  I’m wondering if anyone has experienced obsessions to cut > themselves, and if so, have you acted out on the obsession?  Or, do you know > anyone with OCD who has experienced this? > Juliann

Hi, I’m new to this newsgroup.  I was recently diagnosed with OCD and put on Luvox.  I’m wondering if anyone has experienced obsessions to cut themselves, and if so, have you acted out on the obsession?  Or, do you know anyone with OCD who has experienced this? Juliann

Hi, I’m new to this newgroup.  I’m wondering if anyone has ever had obsessions to cut themselves and if so, have you acted out on the obsessions?  OR, do you know anyone who has?

Response:

Yes,  I have.  It scares some people, but it is actually a form of release to do this.  But something many people don’t know is that  cutting yourself only puts your problems on "hold" and come right back afterwards.  Another, more important consequence to self mutilation is the unconcious damage it does to one’s own self worth.  When you do this, you are saying to yourself(not neccessarily awaringly) that your not good enough to take care of….I hope I’ve helped someone out there understand this a little more.—Sarah
