Behavior changes; OCD?
Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all We have two dogs, both about 1yr and 8 mos old. Sparkle is female mixed lab, black and white, about 50 lbs. Eddie is male, part GS and part hound [coon or gray, we're not sure] , tan, white and black. Both are neutered and were adopted from our local Anti-cruelty shelter, when they were 3 & 4 mos old. The problem is with Eddie…..he seems to have regressed in behavior. We live on a corner in the City, and he is hypervigilant in protecting our property from ANYone that walks by. He hates school buses, delivery trucks, motorcycles, or anything that makes a loud noise. People on bicycles or rollerblades that whiz past also make him bark like crazy. He is so obsessed with guarding that he will not poop outside, and has taken to going in the house. Last night he peed on top of the bed, and my partner was so outraged [and justifiably so] that he wants to take Eddie back to the shelter. It broke my heart looking into Eddie’s eyes. Yes, he’s disturbed in some way, but other than the above, he is warm and loving and will snuggle close. He’s not aggressive to anyone ON the property already. We tried Clamicalm [sp?] last year and it helped along with some training, but he also seemed so numbed that he was out of it. We just started an herbal calming tablet with hops, chamomile, etc. Anyone have ideas on what is causing the behavioral change? I should mention it has been raining the last two days, and Eddie doesn’t like walking on wet grass/mud. We wipe both their paws when they come in and they sit and allow us to do this. Also, occasionally, Sparkle will chase Eddie when he DOES try and poop in the backyard. I have tried letting them out separately lately to no avail. Please help. Bill -Chicago

I have a management suggestion for Eddie. I am sure the trainer types will provide good training advice. If your fence is a chainlink fence, or has gaps in it, he can see everything go past him and things will set him off. I would use blue tarps or construction plastic and lay it over the fence, secured with cable ties, so he can’t see through the fence. I bet he will be nervous about the fence covering too, but you can take him out in the back yard and show him the fence is OK. And you’ve got to stop Sparkle from bothering Eddie. If a dog has a sudden behavioral change, it is worth a trip to the vet for a check-up. Something in your last paragraph jumped out at me: "We just started an herbal calming tablet/Anybody have any ideas what is causing the behavioral change?" Maybe this particular tablet won’t work for your dog. Just some ideas…jdoee and Stacey Dog – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello all We have two dogs, both about 1yr and 8 mos old. Hello steevie, I came in her specifically to put most of you bums out of business because you hurt dogs for a living. That’s what I intend to do. Dogs die from being abused as you and your pals believe is appropriate. You hurt dogs and call that training… You’re as wrong as could be, and you don’t know enough to outwit a puppy dog to be able to train him without hurting him… You are going to be facing legislation that will put abusive professional dog trainers in front of the criminal justice system… Take that to the bank. I guarantee everything I do. Jerry.
