Dealing With a Boss With OCD
Question:
Hello! This is my first posting to this newsgroup. I am interested in hearing from others who have to work with a boss who shows many of the DSM symptoms for OCD, and is compelled to inflict their rigid ritualistic behavior on underlings via task assignment. It really does exacerbate job burnout in the rest of us. I think there is something about the bureaucratic milieu, such as in the gov. agency where I work, that attracts those with OCD and/or brings out this disorder in those who are prone to it. I would also be interested in hearing from any professionals who frequent this group. KC
Response:
It sounds like you may have OCD confused with simple compulsive personality traits. For most OCD sufferers, the disease is an internal hell, not something that can be satisfied with a dictatorial job as a government bureaucrat. OCDers tend to be sensitive people in deep pain who are often inclined to find work that they can do in the privacy of their homes. Compulsive taskmasters who must have things done precisely their way may suffer from compulsive personality disorders, but they certainly do not exemplify the behavior of OCD sufferers. KimJ
Response:
You are not qualified to make diagnoses, that is obvious, otherwise you would not do so based on insufficient information. Are you jealously guarding your pain?
Response:
I believe it is you who have prematirely made a diagnosis. You wrote to the newsgroup asking advice. I’m sorry if you didn’t get sympathy or the advice you wished to hear. But there’s no reason for you to take personal offense. Perhaps your attitude contributes to your problems at work? KimJ
