medications
Question:
I have just been diagnosed with OCD. I am looking for advice on medications. What is available to treat OCD aside from the SSRI’s and tricyclics (which my body has already rejected). thanks tiny
Response:
Hi: Sorry you are having probs. I hated Anafranil but it helped me survive all the craziness. Luvox was Ok, but delivered far less punch. I am taking 40mg/day Prozac since I like it the most. It kills my appetite and energizes me so that I can actually get a few things done. I have a meds sensitve friend who broke up the Prozac capsule, mixed the contents with water in a baby bottle, and took tiny sips over a long period of time. Eventually she was ABLE to dose to 10mg a day and is feeling like an entirely different (and better!) person. You might discuss this with your doc, and good luck to you.

I am using zoloft, which for depression and ocd
Response:
SSRIs and Anafranil a tricyclic are the medicines of choice in treating OCD. If you have a problem with them all there may be some benefit in starting at very low dosages and very gradually increasing them. This has allowed some people to get to a therapeutic level when starting at normal dosages was intolerable. Some of the other antidepressants such as Effexor and the MAOI drugs are sometimes helpful. Non drug treatment of OCD can be very effective. Cognitive behavioral therapy is actually more effective then drugs alone in research studies. Most people can benefit from CBT even if they do well on medication. alyosha wrote: > I have just been diagnosed with OCD. I am looking for advice on > medications. Yes I am on efexxor and it stopped depression in its tracks. Also allowed me to talk about OCD with dr. Now on Welbutrin as well for OCD. Thanks for posting Kirk James M. SSRI antidepressants are very safe drugs at high doses, but if you need this much to get a positive effect then I think you and your doctor need to re-evaluate your medication. Another AD may give you far better results at a much reduced dose. Ian
Response:
Take Paxil up to whatever dose works. Listen to your doc, not Ian. Depends on a number of things. The first of which is – has a doctor prescribed that dosage for you following a medical examination? It isn’t too unusualy for people with severe OCD or depression to be prescribed large amounts of Paxil (Seroxat in the UK) or other SSRIs but it all depends on your general health and age, liver/kidney function and so on. You certainly shouldn’t start experimenting with large dosages on your own without talking to a medical doctor – preferably a psychiatrist. It can be a risky business if you experiment on your own and I wouldn’t advise it at all – but in general SSRIs aren’t as dangerous (even in overdose) as some older varieties of anti-depressant. That’s part of their marketing strength – the people who overdose on them aren’t likely to suffer swift heart failure as a result. Gareth.
