Dear Frizz, Don’t be embarrassed! This problem is a lot more common than you think. I have read that nail or skin picking is OC related, others say it is just a bad habit. They have given this kind of behavior a name, ‘Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors’. You may want to Google it. Some interesting links on nail picking and the likes. http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/SkinPicking.html ~*~In most cases, stereotype unconscious behaviors are innocent and rated as whims or bad habits. They are very common. I’m not aware of any scientific inquiry (see an actual internet opinion poll by surveycentral), but probably you will not find any single human being completely devoid of it. People are chewing their cheeks, biting their nails, scratching their heads, fumbling with their fingers, poking their ears, licking their lips, cracking their knuckles, bouncing their legs, tapping their feet, grinding their teeth.~*~ http://homepage.univie.ac.at/michael.berger/lit/compulsions.html If this behavior is causing a lot of anxiety, talk to your doctor about it. Hi all, Uh, yeah. I do the same thing. I dig my thumbs whenever I get antsy. I can’t speak for everyone, but in my case it is very much nerves. It is a habit that I have noticed anytime something goes wrong, like today when someone tried to break in. I wonder if it isn’t more common than we think? I mean, some of us old timers might remember women in the movies biting their nails when they were scared or something. Now, they never showed us guys doing it, but then we’re supposed to be ultra macho and stuff.
If you can get by with it, finger cots or gloves work for me.
Pax,

I don’t do this any more unless I get very anxious. smiles, Elise Hi folks: I’m almost embarrassed to make this known but I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. I don’t pick, but my husband and friend pick the skin by their cuticles. They pick until their fingers actually bleed. You look at their hands and see little scabs from the cuticles down to their first knuckle. I always thought it was nerves, but it could be due to OCD, I guess. kili — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm
