Obsession of the Month?

Question:

My obsessions have generally been centered around germs, contamination, fear of  illness, sex and guilt.  Until medication, these were a constant.  However,  I’ve also noticed I seem to become obsessed with other things for anywhere  from a month to a year.  Investing and checking my investments, sports, etc. Any thoughts? Regards, Jeremy

It is not uncommon for people with OCD to experience changes in the things they obsess about or the things they have to do compulsivly. It is also common for the severity of OCD to change from time to time. We dont know why these changes occur but they do for many but not all people with OCD. — Jim Claiborn Ph.D. ABPP If I survive this life without dying I’ll be supprised. Mulla Nasrudin

In fact, I have found that these changes are usually the only way one gets  relief from the current obsessions and compulsions:-)  unless they are on  medication.  They generally are welcome……..:-) Tammy

Tammy I dont know if you have had behavior therapy. For most people who go thru this form of treatment there is a significant reduction in obsessions and compulsive behavior. Further this reduction lasts for most people for years. If you have had behavior therapy with out success it is worth looking carefuly at what was tried as some therapists offer less then optimal treatments due to lack of knowledge about what does work. — Jim Claiborn Ph.D. ABPP If I survive this life without dying I’ll be supprised. Greetings Jeremy, First, your candor and honesty are commendable. Try this as it has worked for me in a similar but different situation.  CAST YOUR THOUGHTS ON TO THE LORD. I firmly believe He shall help you.   I am not a religious freak. Quite often we let our thoughts take control.  And given the opportunity, the devil,  in its’  disgusting, despicable, and destructive way will try to get a strangle-hold on you physically and spiritually and as in the case of o.c.d. mentally.  Some may argue that o.c.d. is an organic and biological condition.  I submit otherwise.   I too struggle with demons that try to plague my soul. However I think the ultimate solution is found in prayer ( trust in GOD),  support-groups, and a holistic approach.  This life is short, my  dear brother in Christ,  try to enjoy the gifts that surround you.  I pray for you as you pray for me. Hi Jou, I appreciate your recommendations.  However, one thing you should understand:  I was brought up Jewish.  I have had ample exposure to Christianity, and no  doubt respect it, but it is not me.  I would say, however, that I have far  more in common with a religous Christian than a non-religous Jew.  I embrace  the 10 commandments, Mosha, Abraham, with the commitment of an apostle.  But,  I also question everything I hear, like the prophet I was named after,  Jeremiah.   No doubt, religion is imperative to find any reconciliation in this life. I do  appreciate your articulation of beliefs, but unfortunately I cannot embrace  Jesus Christ as messiah, though no doubt I believe he was a great individual.  I simply find piety beyond human form.  G-d to me, is represented by an image  that is incomprehensible to us humans.   I hope I have not offended you, because although I am not a Christian, I  believe many great things have been acomplished in the name of Christianity. Regards, Jeremy
