I’m inclined to believe that George W. knew the facts when he made this statement. Blaming our president or the American way of life for the attack on the WTC is bull shit. The seeds of the problems of any ethnic or national body of people is embedded in their own culture. American policy since WWII has been to give aid to virtually every nation and encourage democracy and freedom for all people. The masses of most of the Islamic world are uneducated and consequently it is easy for the educated and brighter people to exercise control over them. The same is true for most of the third world countries. It’s unfortunate, but true. The term "knowledge is power" is clearly demonstrated everywhere you look. Georg

I have not changed any of my basic beliefs. It is great that people can express different opinions in the USA and disagree with our government and each other. After all, we certainly couldnt make these comments under the Taliban. I was just saying that for me * personally * I do not care to argue right now about my country, our foreign policy, etc. That is my right – just as it is yours to continue. I dont however understand people in the US taking up for the people that you refer to as "scape goats". Who are you referring to? All Muslims? The Taliban? Afghans? Who?? We were attacked – our civilians were attacked – but some people tend to forget about American suffering and only want to be concerned with the perpetrators. Perhaps those that hate the USA so bad, should go try to live under the Taliban. — "Terrie Strike" <stri…@stu.beloit.edunospam> wrote in message

i don’t agree with their cause for the violent reaction either.. well, not just for the sake of retaliating to what has happened. not just a knee jerk. but even though i may not agree with alot of what i hear, i still think bin Laden and co need to be taken out one way or another. even though is is only suspected of all of this, and thus as you say a scape-goat, he has declared ‘holy war’ against all americans, and said whether they are civilian or military and whatever country they live in they should be destroyed.. or something along those lines. and i think that itself is crime enough to restrain him/them somehow by somebody. even if the US gov is has terrorized, and is no better, i still think SOMEONE has to do this. and i think this event should make Americans more selfconscious too.. in that they will care more about this bullshit their gov’s been pulling off too.. they’ll feel it more. i think the US gov/mil will be more careful with it’s own actions in the future.. but who knows!

Ida, I can understand your fear, but in this case paper is most likely printed locally, though layed out in Florida. I was just reading about the Star/Globe cover belittling bin Laden’s genitalia size. I can see that getting under the skin of a local (1 mile) terrorist. Very hopefully this is just a weird coincidence. Don’t worry about the paper. Lisa

Terrie, Are you specifically need proof regarding the anthrax? Or are you referring to bin Laden’s involvement in the terrorist attack? Or do you not believe the perps were terrorist? I hope it is just the anthrax. In the anthrax situation, the imagination doesn’t have to make a big leap to think that there is a connection between the paper and the neighborhood terrorists. This is a big freaking country, why only a mile away from that airport? Well, coincidences happen, I know. Lisa BTW, of course I agree with part of what you are saying about freedom of speech.

My comments were more to the situation in general then you specificly. Sorry if you felt that way. If you’ve been reading editorial pages lately, you’ve probably seen the letters saying that anyone who’s saying that they don’t support governement action is a traitor (and, yes, the word traitor has actually been used). That was more what I was thinking of. Again, nothing meant against you. Just as I’m allowed to voice my opinion and beliefs, so are you. *That* is what I support about this country. Not the people in office, not even the offices themselves. But the right of people to voice their thoughts, to live their lives and to live. IMO, there have to be better ways to protect those things than to teach the Afghani people the same sort of fear we have so recently felt. -Terrie

I think we need proof about who was behind the anthrax attack before we start pointing fingers. I’ve already heard people say "Gee, you need a big fancy govt-funded lab to produce bio weapons." As I said earlier, no, you need an undergrad microbiology course. Scary, but true. Some petri dishes and an incubator can produce a lot of scary stuff. As for bin Laden, yeah, I think he’s dangerous. But bombing Afghanistan isn’t going to make it better. Rather like trying to play that "bop the gopher" game blindfolded. -Terrie

I don’t believe it is the OCD demons that say there might be anthrax spores on your paper. I think it is a very healthy and aware mind that makes the connections. What may be OCD is your reaction to these very heathy thoughts. If you are 99.99% sure there is no reasonable chance of anthrax being in your paper and you still won’t open it, then OCD is likely involved. I’m sure you know that the more you avoid those .01% chances, the more power OCD will gain. The more you accept that .01% risk and open the paper anyway, the less power the OCD way of thinking and behavior will have. But if you have any reason to believe your paper has been contaminated or could have been contaminated, based upon facts you have gathered, then OCD is not likely a factor. I think "normal" people are going to evaluate the chances of their paper being contaminated once they know the Globe has been a target. This is quite normal and healthy. Many may error on the side of caution but I would not consider this an OCD reaction. whatatrip "Ida Kern" <clooney…@REMOVETHISmindspring.com> wrote in message

I think our actions are such that we are minimizing the terror that Afgans will experience as we carry out what needs to be done. There is no way to avoid the terror of being bombed. I think that if there was a way of getting those responsible the attacks on the Towers without using weapons that are terrifying, then we would use them. Whether it will get some of the terrorists I don’t know, but the squeezing of Taliban funds was already having a major effect, from what I’ve seen on TV, and the intelligence work was also finding people. What the bombing will do, apart from killing civilians and making starvation this winter more likely, will be to increase Arab resentment towards the west, inclining them more towards Islamic fundamentalism, which is as much about politics as it is about religion. Apparently Bin Laden’s video, in which he lists the wrongs that have been done to the Arab people over the years, has been shown all over that region of the world. He’s a clever fuck. It’s the linking of legitimate grievance with extreme religion which is very dangerous. There’s no way bombing will deal with terrorism. It’ll just create more embittered people, some of them twisted enough to become terrorists themselves. — simon smith

I hardly claim be an expert. However, I do know somethings about history and about people. First of all, everyone is calling this our generation’s Pearl Harbor. Actually a pretty good analogy. It was known that such an attack from Japan was a possibility, but those in charge choose to ignore this and so were unprepared. McVeigh made it pretty clear that we were a country at risk for terrorism, yet we waited until a bigger attack to actually do something. Much of the world was greatly saddened by what happened, by also felt that it might have been prevented if we paid attention to the warnings. Second, when the attack first occured, the majority of the Muslim world was actually on our side. The use of the Islamic religion as justification on the part of the people involved was viewed as corruption of Islamic ideals. Had we attempted to get cooperation from the Middle East on the stance of "This is a crime against your beliefs as much as ours", we might have gotten somewhere. We might not have, either. However, we’ll never know, will we? Instead, Bush stood up, before the facts were all in, and proclaimed that the US wanted bin Laden dead or alive. And now we’ve bombed Afghanistan. We limited our options at the very beginning. As for TV, I’m not allowed to watch the news anymore. My friends got tired of me yelling "Media bias!" at the screen.
