OT: Question of the day…. 11/20/05

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Today`s question is being brought to you by one of our very own anon poster`s  :) How many credit cards do you have?  Do you have any debt on  them?    None, and after my previous experience with one, I don’t particularly want another one. Though I keep getting letters from my bank offering me cards with a pre-approved limit of $30,000!!! I think my entire salary would not even cover the interest on that. I have no idea why they are offering it to me.    The last card I didn’t ask for. A finance company transferred my loan over to their credit card scheme so they could up my interest rate to 29.5%. And the card wasn’t even accepted by anyone, anywhere, it was solely being used by the comany as a way to get around the laws regarding loans.

Credit card companies make their money off of people who are willing to run up huge debt that they are unable to pay off.  I’m not a bit surprised you are getting offers for a credit limit that is way beyond what you can actually afford. A few years ago, I went back to college to get my degree.  The street across from the university was always littered with credit card companies, offering t-shirts and God knows what else to anyone that would sign up.  They were intentionally targeting the young kids, the students who hadn’t learned how to manage their money yet.  I could just see a young person racking up a huge credit card bill with ungodly interest — that probably Mommy and Daddy would have to help them out with.  It really mad me angry to see the vendors there.  Vultures. I am most happy to report that I have NO credit cards.  I did the 10-year bankruptcy thing in 1996 when I was way over my head in debt, unemployed, and newly diagnosed and deemed disabled. One more year and, if I wanted to, I could get a credit card. I don’t need one, I don’t want one, and I intend to continue living within my somewhat limited means. Wish me luck <lol. I think 3.  One for business(which is on hold), one for everyday purchases, and one that I used to consolidate bills that the ex (and I) had piled up.  That one has 3.99% interest for the life of the loan, the trick is to not buy anything on that card!  Any purchases will have an interest rate of 15.99!  And all payments go toward the lowest interest loan until it’s paid off, then payments go toward the high interest items.  A card like this will wipe you out if you use it for purchases.  Do you have any debt on  them?

First 2 are paid in full every month.  The third one that consolidated what the ex ran up (and maybe I helped) is now down from the 5 digit range to the 4 digit range (at 3.99%). Tono — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

I’m happy to say that I haven’t had a credit card for more than a decade. I only have one debit card, which has been good enough for pretty much everything.  In an anxious and OCD fashion, I have managed to stay out of debt for many years, and hope to stay that way. It is possible to enjoy life without becoming a financial slave. Even if it does mean going without food for a short time, or living off of cans of mercury-tainted tuna, or living in a home that is slowly falling apart faster than can be fixed. Overall, seems a matter of trade-offs from my point of view. I just wish all of this responsible behavior and avoidance of disaster wasn’t such a turn-off to women. I managed to hit enter before I finished somehow, and "stop" didn’t stop the message, so I will add what I missed. I don’t like having any debt, so I pay my card just after I make the purchase. I don’t buy anything unless I have the money to pay for it at the time. That way I don’t get myself into trouble. As I don’t have a job, I can’t afford to be in debt. cheers, Gregory 11/20/05: Today`s question is being brought to you by one of our very own anon poster`s  :) How many credit cards do you have?  Do you have any debt on  them? It’s hard to tell. George Costanza had success with, "I’m unemployed and I live with my parents." But, oops — that was TV, not life. Forget I said anything. Deirdre. ;-) — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm
