Albert Ellis / REBT
Question:
those that do not subscribe to rebt have less then an optimal understanding of it-like Ellis I studied and used a dynamic form of therapy. Like Ellis I became disillusioned with the true benefits of analytic dynamic humanistic approaches. So I trained an learned his. I have found it revelatory in many ways. It has some limitations that a skilled practitioner can compensate for using some other techniques, but on the whole, I have found it very helpful for myself and many many others. Best of luck with this

sayin’: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I read "How to control your anxiety before it controls you " and it helped quite a bit, It not only gave me a way to analyze my problems to help combat anxiety, plus It provides a positive distraction from my panic attacks, initially it was very helpfull just to make me not afraid of my thoughts during a anxiety attack I just started reading "Overcoming destructive belief, feeing and behaviors" and like this book even better, give more insight to rebt. I was looking for a rebt or cbt therapist but am having the problem of finding one in my insurance group that available evening hours in my area, I am sure I will work it out in time one of problems I am having, I seem to be able to dispute some of my anxiety situations and feel better, but my main problem is fear of the anxiety, when that happens, and it causes me to anxietize, and I can fall back on all the irrational belief, (not only does irrational beliefs cause anxiety but anxiety can cause irrational beliefs) I need more behavior therapy to get over the anxiety of the panic attacks as I work with the rational thoughts and this takes time, but I believe eventually it will help Jim

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been reading about Ellis’ approach to therapy. Got started with him as a result of becoming aware that I had a bit of a problem controlling my anger, and the more I read the more I see applications for his stuff in other areas of my life and in the wider society as well. Chip mentioned that some of you are familiar with Ellis and his work, and I’d like to get a sense of how effective his approach seems to you. Since I’m coming at this from the point of view of "Holy shit! This is GREAT!" I’d particularly like to hear from folks who DON’T think it’s so great. Any contributions? Thanks.
In that case I’ll keep my mouth shut as I find it very effective as a *tool for living*, certainly not just for anxiety. Philip — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm
