Anyone on Celexa?
Question:
Can you please share you Celexa experience with me? My PCP just prescribed Celexa for anxiety and depression. I’m going to be on 20mg. a day for 30 days. Isn’t the therapeutic dose higher than that? This is only my second day on it but I’m extremely tired (maybe I’ll finally be able to sleep!) and feel like I’m going to vomit. I suppose the side effect will wear off in a week or two? Thanks, Dee

Dear Dee, People with anxiety disorders should start anti-depressants at a low dose and wean slowly up to the prescribed dose. You should have started at 5mgs, increasing your dose in 5mg increments once a week until you reached 20mgs. Weaning this way hopefully minimizes the side-effects. Therapeutic dose of Celexa can range from 20mgs to 60mgs, although some people have done well on 10mgs. Give Celexa 6 to 8 week to become effective and your side-effects should wear off in a few weeks. Take care!! Jackie

Hi Dee, I’ve been on Celexa for almost 2 months now. I started on 5mg for 5 days than, 10 for the rest of the month. I am now on 30mg and doing pretty good. It has almost completly controled my panic attacks and anxiety, although my depression isn’t a whole lot better. But my doc thinks maybe I have a thyroid problem and thats why it’s not doing alot for it. It’s pretty normal to start below a theraputic dose for a bit to get used to the possible side effects. As I said before I started really really low. But depending on how you do your doc will probably increase to 30 or 40mgs. I have been lucky and had absolutly NO side effects other than the occasional nausea. I find that even if you feel sick make sure you eat and it’ll go away in 20-30min. I was told to take it with some milk to lessen the nausea…you may want to give that a try. And after the initial 2-3 weeks it should wear off. I only feel sick if I go for a while after I take it without eating. As long as you take it with breakfast you should be fine… Good Luck, Kirsten ~~ All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream. – Edgar Allan Poe-

Yes, initial side effects (of which nausea is a well known one) will wear off with time. You should give Celexa 6-8 weeks to be able to properly assess its effect but you’ll probably feel better much sooner. Ideally one should start is at a lower dose in order to prevent/minimize initial side effects but you seem to be able to handle them. Celexa has a rather large *therapeutic window*, it may work at almost any dose, average is around 20-40 mg. Philip

Hi Dee, I have been on Celexa since last spring/summer. I initialy started at a low dose I think it was 10 mg per day maybe 5 then gradually increased up to 20 per day. I had some initial G/I probs with it but they soon went away. I have found it to be a good med for me in regards to my depression.I am wondering why your Dr only prescribed it for 30 days? To me, this is not normal. It takes at least that much time to get used to it and see how the med works for you and at which dosage you feel best on.The therapeutic dosage varies, most people do well at about 40 mg per day. YMMV Good Luck! If you have any questions or problems feel free to contact me. Steph
