Buspar with other meds?

Question:

Has anyone had good results in taking Buspar with other meds? Several years ago I took it alone for depression/anxiety but it wasn’t quite enough on its own. I now take 20 mg Paxil and three 0.5mg Klonopin daily, but I still experience a lot of anxiety anyway and the only thing that helps is to take more Klonopin than what my current prescription allows. Should I ask my doc to add Buspar? Or should I try to get him to increase the Klonopin? I know Klonopin comes in 1 mg tablets also.  Any help appreciated, as many stressful things are going on in my life (husband’s medical problems, pressure at work, in addition to the basic depression and anxiety that I’ve been trying to live with for 17 years.) Thanks! —

Hi! Buspar doesn’t have a good track record with panic attacks. It seems some people with milder anxiety have benefited from it though. Your Paxil dose is not very high and I can understand the ned to add something else, like a benzo. The Klonopin dose is actually low. Average therapeutic dosage is said to be from 3 mg upwards. So I would talk to your doctor about it if I were you and either raise the Paxil dose or the Klonopin dose or maybe both (though not at the same time as that makes it impossible to assess what does what). Hope this helps some. Philip

I take buspar (15 mg. 2x a day) and klonopin as needed (1 mg. several times a week.  I am skeptical of buspar, as are many others. I’m not sure if it helps or not.    Klonopin certainly has a more immediate effect. Good luck Robin         Robin

I think you kinda answered your own question there.  :)  As has been said here many times – B is not that great for most. I now take 20 mg Paxil and three 0.5mg Klonopin daily, but I still experience a lot of anxiety anyway and the only thing that helps is to take more Klonopin than what my current prescription allows.

That kinda indicates that the K works for you. Should I ask my doc to add Buspar?

Do you want to add another med? Or should I try to get him to increase the Klonopin? I know Klonopin comes in 1 mg tablets also.

Yes it is….and you are on such a low dose I would start there if it were me rather than risking another med and possible side effects.  Any help appreciated, as many stressful things are going on in my life (husband’s medical problems, pressure at work, in addition to the basic depression and anxiety that I’ve been trying to live with for 17 years.)

K is widely accepted for anxiety tho it has been reported to worsen depression. I have now heard of Buspar helping with depression.  I know that Paxil should help that – but might aggrivate the anxiety.  (These meds get soooo complicated)  Perhaps deciding which is bothering you most – anx or depression – and working on that first would help.  Then attacking the other – you have 2 good meds there, but I have learned to change only one thing at a time so if anything doesn’t go right you know what to look to.  I would talk to your doc when you decide which should be addressed first – or talk about the whole picture – but target one area first. I have been taking Prozac, Buspar and Klonopin .5, as needed for 7 years.  I tried to stop the buspar, but felt too much anxiety. Buspar is not known for being good for Panic Attacks, but it does help general anxiety in some people.  YMMV I am now switching over to Paxil.  I would bring up and discuss several options with your Doctor.  1) increasing you Klonopin (I take 1 mg 3x per day)  2) adding a small amount of Buspar, say 5 mg each time you take your klonopin. 3) increasing your paxil a bit.  4) trying a different anti-depressant. These are just ideas, use them or not as you see fit. Are you having Panic Attacks or are you having General Anxiety? That would make a difference in how to treat this. I would recommend Dr. Kernodle’s book, if you have not read it, yet. Good Luck, Kiesha Van Dyke To e-mail, remove ** from address.

don’t forget the tricyclics. ssri’s didn’t do anything for me but imiprimine and anafrinil have made life normal again, along with the buspar. Are you actually on a combo of clomipramine and imipramine (and buspar)? That is interesting. Can you tell me your doctor’s arguments for prescrbing two TCA’s (what doses?) at once? Just curious as TCA’s seem to agree with me too. Just curious as TCA’s seem to agree with me too. it sounds weird but after the explination it should make sense. i was started on 75mg of anafinil a day, but the sides were too much. i was shaking a lot and my vision was weird. anyway, my doctor cut the dose to 50mg of anafrinil in the morning and 50mg of imiprimine at night. the reason being that both of these meds are exactly the same except anafrinil has an extra chloride molecule in it’s make up. my doctor said that it’s this molecule that causes the bad side effects in some people, but it seems to be what helps the panic the most as compaired with imiprimine. anyway it’s like i’m on the same med, but the anafrinil just has a little more kick to it. they work wonderful together and i haven’t had a PA or any major anxiety since i left the hospital last novemeber. plus my doctor is already weening me off of all of my meds. -joey NEW AMERICAN BOLLARD WEB PAGE…. http://members.aol.com/papilln/index.html                           cider, lost love and road trips.     the one and only original from MEMPHIS
