Question:

Hi Luke, I have never smoked pot, ’cause the few times I was around it, my face swelled up, so I am not sure, but I might be allergic to it…..plus, I am kind of a law and order type girl. *sigh* But, I do know that Pred, even by itself can cause panic attacks. I was on it for months, and I felt like I had an anxiety attack all of the time. I am not on Pred now, and if it was allowed here for medical purposes AND if I wasn’t allergic to it, I would be willing to try pot for my CD. I have been at 40mg of Pred for the past 2 months and have smoked pot on several occasions since then. I’ve not had any adverse side effects whatsoever. Maybe your body just didn’t like them together! ) Babigirl

Well, not that I’d know from personal experience…(tee hee hee), but pot initially raises your heart rate, so combined with prednisone (which also raises your heart rate and blood pressure) I’d say it’s a definite possibility that the prednisone & pot may have had a bad reaction together. I’m not certain that whether or not they are known to have a bad reaction together though. It may be best for you to avoid smoking marijuana while you are on steroid therapy if you’re having bad effects like you described. If you’re unsure, see if you can ask a doctor whom you trust about it…just ask him or her not to write it down in your chart if you don’t want others to know about it! Love, Vikki

I was never on prednisone for the 3 months that I "never smoked pot" but I did have a really freaky experience on the "pot I never took" back when it was a nickel bag. Apparently the "pot I never took" was laced with something and my arms were no longer connected to my body and my mind skipped every few seconds…it was like being in a strobe light but there was no strobe light and I was very paranoid…it was a whole lot like a panic attack only I didn’t know what one was like back then. I never again took pot that I never took in the first place. I would say that those who wanted it for medicinal purpose should it be legal, should definitely grow their own for quality insurance purposes. — DAWN/Bonnie

Hey, I have not seen any literature or research to this effect, but I think that prednisone + weed can increase your chances of having a panic attack. I have read that panic attacks can occur with pot smoking anyway. But when I am on prednisone I tend to have panic attacks more frequently when smoking grass. Because of this I usually lay off grass when I am taking prednisone. The panic attacks feel kind of like I’m drowning. My head goes all swimmy, I feel frightened for no reason at all, and then I feel like I’m not getting enough oxygen to my head. I feel incredibly restless and uncomfortable. It goes away after a while. Is this what you experienced? That’s a classic panic attack. They are tremendously disturbing but not life threatening. Unfortunately this aspect does remove the recreational factor from marijuana use. Who wants to smoke it if they’re just going to be terrified and sick all night long?
