Is this another symptom?

Question:

Yep,its another symptom along with lots of others.I’m a veteran,so if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.                                          Casey

Response:

I have the lump in my throat feeling too.  It feels just like you do when you really want to cry but are doing everything you can not too.  It is very tiring..you sure are right about that!! Dawn

Response:

Wow I must really be undermedicated. .25Xanax  twice aday for acute axniety. Guess I better start listening to the pdoc and double that 3 x day. Brenda

Response:

I take 1/2 of a .5 mg a day up to three times as needed.  I have a follow-up appt. with my shrink next Friday.  I’ll ask him about this feeling.  It’s very unnerving.  While I’m at it, I have another couple of symptoms to ask about.  Once in awhile, I’ll have this feeling in my throat.  The only way I can think of to describe it is that it feels like one fast jolting heartbeat in my throat.  Could that be possible?  Or are there nerves in there too?  Also once in a while, my heart will pound once real hard.  It’s scary.  I should be used to all this stuff by now but it seems like I get new symptoms on a daily basis. Thanks in advance! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Is the feeling of a lump in your throat another signs of PAs? <snip Hi Martha, Yes, a lump in the throat can be a sign of anxiety. I have had it before (it IS awful) when I was under a lot of stress. Ho much Klonopin do you take each day? Could you possibly get your doctor to raise your dosage or to add Xanax PRN for a little while? That might help to relieve this problem you are having. Also, you should probably get yourthroat checked out by an MD….just in case it is something else. (Which is unlikely. :) ) Best Wishes, Jen

Did it just go away on it’s own? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hello Martha, This "lump in throat" sensation was in fact one of my first symptoms.  I had the problem for quite a while, and after complaining to my GP, was informed that it is called "globus".  I looked it up in a psychology dictionary where it was confirmed.  It used to be called "globus hystericus" but then the "hystericus" part was dropped because people are not always hysterical when they have this symptom.  It can come with general anxiety.  In my case, this symptom was so strong that it actually caused me to throw up numerous times before my exams in May/June ‘98.  This was when my PD actually started to prevent me from functioning in everyday life.  A year on, the globus is gone, and things are looking up! Thank you everyone for your responses.  I do plan to make an appt. with my MD and get this checked out just in case it’s not due to anxiety which I am so filled with.  I have been under much stress lately and can’t seem to relax at all.   – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi Martha, This lump in the throat sensation that we P/A people get is called Globus syndrome.  It can be caused by stress.  The more you think about your swallowing problem, the worse it gets and the more anxious you get.  Some people get relief through relaxation exercises.  The relaxation exercises can help all your muscles to relax, including your throat.  See "Breathing & Relaxation exercises posted here 5/27. Response:

I also had a lump in my throat.  Unlike the others who responded to your message, mine was due to dyspepsia (chronic indegestion).  My panic attacks had lead to me having a ‘nervous stomach’, when the acid in your stomach caused by indegestion rises, it often feels like a lump in the throat.  It is normally accompanied by a feeling of nausea caused by the stomach acid. It may be that this is the case for you, so get yourself to the doctor as this can sometimes lead to stomach ulcers. Antacids & peppermint may help short term.  If you do have dyspepsia or irritable bowel syndrom it may make your panic attacks worse as they seem to feed off of one another.  Whatever it turns out to be, you should get it checked out – that way you can put an end to it. Good luck! Andrew

Hi Martha! The lump-in-your-throat-feeling is a very common PD-symptom. Some people have difficulty swallowing. The benzo should take care of it though. Maybe you’re undermedicated? Average therapeutic dose for Klonopin is around 3 mgs. There are other possibilities such as adding some Xanax. Philip

Hi Martha, I take 1/2 of a .5 mg a day up to three times as needed.

So that’s a grand total of "possibly" 1.5 mgs per day. IMO, you could easily double that if you are still having symptoms. You need to talk to your doc about this. It may be that you are simply undermedicated, as Philip also pointed out. 3 mgs per day is a standard dose for this medication for anxiety. It might help you to gradually increase your dosage and take the medication regularly for awhile. Then, if you start feeling better, you can taper your dose back down again. I have a follow-up appt. with my shrink next Friday.  I’ll ask him about this feeling.  It’s very unnerving.

Yes, it can be. And please, tlak to him about your meds. I really think a lot of what you are having is breakthrough anxiety from not enough Klonopin in your system.  While I’m at it, I have another couple of symptoms to ask about.  Once in awhile, I’ll have this feeling in my throat.  The only way I can think of to describe it is that it feels like one fast jolting heartbeat in my throat.  Could that be possible?

::smile:: I get that all the time. Actually, it is typically gas in the esophagus. It does feel like a weird heartbeat. But, if you just …well, there’s no nice way of saying it "Burp", it will go away. :) Or are there nerves in there too?

Yes. You have "nerve" everywhere that are all affected by the surges of adrenenalin and other neurochemicals that your body sends out when anxious. This disorder can effect any and all parts of your body. And,the symptoms can change from month to month and year to year. Mine have a lot over the 23 years I have had this disorder.  Also once in a while, my heart will pound once real hard.  It’s scary.

Oh, I hate that one. I always used to get this in the middle of the night. I’d wake up with my heart racing and pounding. Thought for sure I was going to die. Since I have been on the Klonopin regularly, I no longer have this or any nocturnal panic attacks. ::YEAH!!::: Those were the WORST for me.  I should be used to all this stuff by now but it seems like I get new symptoms on a daily basis.

I am afraid that is all too typical of this disorder. I don’t know how long youhave had PD/anxiety, but things do tend to settle out over time. And, sometimes you can get off the meds completely for periods of time. But, in my experience, if the PD is truly biochemical in origin, you end up back on the meds sooner or later. And, that is not such a terrible thing really. There are many people in the world who have to take medication all of their lives for various disorders. Some of us with PD are the same way. There is no reason we should feel ashamed or weak because of that. No more than someone with inherited high blood pressure should feel ashamed of controlling their BP with meds. It has take me a very longtime to come to this realization and to the level of acceptance I have for my disorder. But, it’s worth it. I have so much peace of mind now compared to what I used to be like. Like I always say, even the "normal" people aren’t! EVERYONE has somthing(s) in their life that is a challenge(s). So, we are not different. Best Wishes and hope you get some relief soon! Jen

Hi Martha My doctor couldn’t prescribe anything other than a muscle relaxant, ie. valium and an antidepressant.  Neither seemed to help although I must admit I didn’t stay on the antidepressant for long enough (3 weeks). At the time, I got myself a full-time job and did everything I could to keep my mind off it.  I took herbal remedies to help me sleep and tried to decrease my overall level of tension.  Over time, it just got less and less. I still have anxiety problems, but I have managed to decrease my symptoms quite a bit (thankfully!!). I would suggest that when the globus is annoying you, chew a mint or sip water, breathe deeply and try to go and do something that would be so interesting that it takes your mind off it.  I wish I could tell you that by taking some tablet it will magically disappear, but I don’t know of any. However, I am taking Kava Kava, St. John’s Wort and Tiber Syrup at present and perhaps they are helping. Hope this helps!! Hi Martha, I love this group too :-)  That lump feeling(Globus Hystericus) in your throat can be a sign of anxiety, I have had it myself on occassion, and find it quite annoying. I did have it one other time, and that was when I had thryoid problems. I suggest to you, that being this is a new symptom, to have it checked out by your medical doctor. You want to make sure it is anxiety causing it and not a physical reason. Take care. Jackie ~~ If ignorance is bliss, why aren’t more people happy~~
