liminal, vegetative, and vulnerable
Question:
P.S. – Grammar fundies would also claim that you shouldn’t have that comma before the "and". Unless your name is P**** B******* (former?) Editor-In-Chief of K***** DEMANDED the comma before the last "and" in a listing of 3 or more items, who also made certain the Rule was listed in the company’s Style Guide.
I was told that the American style was not to use a comma before the ‘and’ in a list, but not in a sentence, so "There names were: Sarah, Steven, and Michael". but "Sarah, Steven and Michael went on a trip to the seaside". Unfortunately, as with most grammar, most people get horribly confused about it, so pretty much anything goes. I am learning all about the words liminal, vegetative, and vulnerable. I am trying to practice using the words liminal, vegetative, and vulnerable correctly in a sentance. How am I doing so far?? Response:
Stewart was driven to the poshest restaurant in town in a very classy stretch liminal, where in keeping with his new healthy eating plan, he protracted to order the vegatative sampler platter. When finished with his after dinner latte lite, he went to a nightclub, via the stretch liminal, met a sexy woman, had unprotracted coitus and constricted a vulnerable disease in his nether regents, and hasn’t vultured out since. sorry – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am learning all about the words liminal, vegetative, and vulnerable. Response:
The words "liminal", etc. should have been enclosed in quotes. You misspelled "sentence". So I guess my answer is NOT VERY GOOD! P.S. – Grammar fundies would also claim that you shouldn’t have that comma before the "and".
There is an old parable (maybe attributed Lao Tzu) about fish and a fish trap. It likens fish to ideas, and fish traps to words. Need I go on?? I don’t think I really need go on, but for the metaphorically challenged among us, the concept here is that we use fish traps to catch fish, and once the fish has been caught, the trap ceases to be of importance. Of course, one needs to pay attention to traps in order to build them strong enough to catch fish. But the point, value, meaning, and usefullness of fish traps is the fish that they are able to catch. <Stewart smacks RGB upside the head with a trout. I know that you were just "fun’n" me with this response. I caught your fish (your humor) just as I believe you caught the fish of my initial post in this thread. But, for the sake of further clarification….. I currently abide in a state subsumed by internal vegetative processes beyond my control or full awareness. In this liminal place time has no measure. And I am infinitely vulnerable. Sincerely Stewart liminal: The threshold of a physiological or psychological response. As in subliminal; 1. Below the threshold of conscious perception. 2. Inadequate to produce conscious awareness but able to evoke a response. vegetative: Relating to, or capable of growth. vulnerable: a. Susceptible to physical injury. b. Susceptible to attack. c. Open to censure or criticism. — The Metaphor Man and The Great Defender of the Self
