new to group – need info/help

Question:

I have been having some weird health symptoms lately and in searching on the net, I  think it might be related to hypoglycemia or diabetes.  I have a doctor’s appt. this week.  Is there and FAQ for this newsgroup?

Your best advice will be that which your doctor gives you.  Follow his advice, see a diabetic practitioner, if in fact you are diabetic, and you will learn to live with this problem. The millenium arrived a year early. . .

Has anyone else discovered symptoms before getting a formal diagnosis? Does this sound like either Hypoglycemia or Disbates to anyone who is familiar with it?

get a good physical from a doctor whose specialty is preventive or sports medicine or gynecology or or or research endocrinology or gastroenterology or or or or your observations are valid your conclusions may or may not be correct.  your behaviour is impeccably correct. I have been trying to snack and eat the same amount, but more frequently, for the past few days and that seems to be helping.

Jennifer, Thank you for the kind words you sent to me via email.  It sure was nice for a Monday morning.   As knowledgeable as folks are here, it really isn’t the place for any diagnosis.  Even the docs won’t offer advice because there are so many factors at play.  Keep your doctor’s appointment and be sure to tell her/him everything that is going on when these events happen.     If you know of someone with a home blood glucose monitor, you may want to borrow it to check your blood sugars at different times during the day.  This could tell you if it is related to blood sugar changes at certain times of the day.  You still need to check with the doc though. There is a faq for this group.  It is in 5 parts.  You can either access this through www.deja.com and search or use www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes. Good luck and for your sake, I hope that you do not have to deal with either hypoglycemia or diabetes. Marilyn T1 for 33 years, pumping for the last 11

Well, just guessing here– keep that in mind.  Panic attacks and an out of it feeling when you haven’t eaten in a while do sound like hypoglycemia.  You could go to the doctor, although a lot of them barely recognize a diagnosis of hypoglycemia, won’t test you for it, etc. Your diet sounds good, and it is wise to eat more often, particularly before you drive.   You could have diabetes I suppose– it just sounds a little more like hypoglycemia.  I would recommend that you purchase an inexpensive glucose monitor at the drugstore, perhaps a Basic One Touch.  Start taking your blood sugar several times a day, particularly when you get the foggy crave a Coke feeling. Record the results. That would tell you more than a lab that you would get at a doctor’s office, unless he put you through a glucose tolerance test (and she might not). Hypoglycemia can sometimes preceed diabetes, so you do need to watch this.  Are you tired or anything? If it turns out you have hypoglycemia, you may have adrenal problems and/or thyroid problems as well.  Go to a good, thorough endocrinologist if you have hypoglycemia, and get a stimulation test done for your adrenal gland and a full range of thyroid blood tests (TSH, T4, Free T4, Total T3) Good luck. The best thing to do would be to check your blood sugar at the time of the attacks? Does the coke make them go away? If it does you may be on the right track . If however the coke does not help then it may be something else (perimeopause comes to mind) . Either way a docs appointment is a good idea. ctantiques

You’re right, BL…if it were diabetes type 1, she certainly wouldn’t be exhibiting hypoglycemic symptoms, at least not any that would be fixed with a Coke.  For that, insulin is required. Some monitors can be obtained for about $20 or less, and some have a rebate. Jennifer – It’s good to have an idea what it *might* be when you go in to see the doctor, because that way if the doctor doesn’t suggest it as a possibility, you can mention it.  I have a friend who is hypoglycemic, as is her son, and she understands what I’m going through if I have an insulin reaction because it is the same as she experiences if she doesn’t eat. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee that you have hypoglycemia, but it sure is possible!!! — ~ Mookie ~ T1 since 10/80

I have been having some weird health symptoms lately and in searching on the net, I  think it might be related to hypoglycemia or diabetes.  I have a doctor’s appt. this week.  Is there and FAQ for this newsgroup? I am a 35 yo female, former dancer/personal trainer and now a marketing executive.  So I’ve been healthy my whole life  I’m not skinny anymore, but not overweight (5′6"  135-140 lbs.) and work our 3-5 times a week.  I eat a low carb/low fat/low sugar diet.  I do eat lots of fruit/veggies and proteins – chicken, fish, peanut butter, red meat (once a month or so).  I don’t eat often though – usually just lunch & dinner and far apart, lunch at 12-1 and dinner at 7-9 – no snacks in between.  No history of Diabetes in family. I was getting what I thought were panic attacks while driving home during rush hour – between 5-7 pm and in traffic, heat, very slow for over an hour.  It felt like a consciousness (sp?) shift or  short circuit.  Gradually getting more and more tired, feeling like I was losing touch, feeling like I was disoriented and not in control of my space, the car and environment.  I was able to pull over and rest. I got Cokes at the store cause I thought I needed caffeine, but maybe I needed sugar?  This has been happening to me almost every day for the past week in early evening – even when I am not driving.   But never in the morning – always late afternoon to early evening In piecing together what I’ve read hereand elsewhere, I think I might be having hypo attacks.  but I’m not really sure what they are – can someone explain? Has anyone else discovered symptoms before getting a formal diagnosis? Does this sound like either Hypoglycemia or Disbates to anyone who is familiar with it?
