Paxil????

Question:

hi there kelly! i have been taking paxil for five months now and although i don’t like advocating drugs, it has saved me.  i had been having such bad panic attacks that i ended up at the hospital thinking i was having a heart attack.  they prescribed paxil (20mg) and atavan (.5mg)at the time. the atavan did nothing but give me gritty mouth (my friends started calling me "gritty kitty").  i experienced dry mouth, shaking leg, and the yawns, and had to take it in the morning so i wouldn’t be up all night.  i had to take a month off work because i couldn’t leave the house cuz my attacks were worse when i was in public.   i went back to the doctor (another one) because my attacks were starting to get worse, and he upped my dosage to 30mg, and i have been great since.  i still get the yawns, the shaking leg went away, and my attacks are few and far between now.  i have been back to work for almost four months, i can go out again, i can be around people…i have my life back, although i don’t put myself in any situation that may bring on an attack. i have been on a couple of anti-depressants (effexor, prozac) and oxazepam and currently taking clonazepam for those attacks that creep up on me.  i will be honest, of all the different meds i have been on, paxil has caused me the least problems of all.  i went off it for a couple of weeks because i couldn’t get to the doctor, the half life isn’t nearly as long as prozac, and i had the least problems with it. i am not going to tell you to take it because really, everyone is different.  i just wanted you to hear my story to take into consideration when you are making your decision. good luck, and if you need to talk, i am here for you…i had no one to talk to when i went on it, and i really could have used someone to talk to about it. leanne Before you buy.

i was on paxil for several years. -when i first started taking it, i had some minor side affects, such as a wierd yawny feeling in my jaw. it went away very quickly. -it helped a lot with my panic attacks and anxiety. did not erase it entirely but helped. -getting of paxil is another story. for me it has been impossible. i am now taking one pill every week, or else i have horrible dizzy spells and wierd seizure like things. my experience of paxil is that it was the first anti-depressent/anxiety med that actually did anything. and i had been on prozac and many others before that. but be aware of the withdrawal problems getting off it. i really wish they had told me about this. xoxo johanna – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – hey has anyone here been on or is on paxil?  My doctor wants to but me on it for panic attacks and I was just wondering what type of feeling if any that you have felt.  Also what were the side effects.  Most anti-depressants have had no affect on me, so if you can please let me know how well and alwao what you felt like on paxil. thanks, kelley

Hi Kelley, A few years ago I was suffering panic attacks too, and when these attacks stood in the way of effective therapy sessions (I was just too panicy to concentrate on the real stuff) my doc prescribed Paxil (it’s called ‘Seroxat’ here in the Netherlands). At first it made me sleepy and thirsty, bit dizzy too, but after a short a time as two weeks it made a HUGE difference in my overall feeling of panic.. I became much more clear headed.. enough for the panic attacks to go away slowly (in combination with therapy of course). I took Paxil for a period of six months, the panic attacks haven’t come back since… So, briefly said, the Paxil made my thinking more clear and supressed the spinning thoughts.. Good luck, I hope it’ll work for you as much as it did for me! Love, Marloes

Response:

Kelley, I was started on Paxil by a rather incompetent psychiatrist when I was at a very low weight.  It made me extremely nervous and I ended up stopping it cold-turkey.  (Wouldn’t recommend the cold turkey method, though.)  A few years later, I was told by another psychiatrist that my initial dosage had been too much;  the pdoc who prescribed it should have started me on a smaller dosage and worked up.  That could have been the problem, although neither my grandmother nor my mother can take Paxil, either. That was just my experience.  I certainly can’t advise you whether to take it, but if you choose to I really hope it helps. anonymous girl
