the drug "Ecstasy" and serotonin

Question:

I know some people have asked in the past if their drug use could have caused their panic attacks or depression. This was in this morning’s paper and I will condense it a bit:     " People who use the illegal drug Ecstasy are putting themselves at risk for brain damage, a study says. Brain scans of 14 men and women who have used the drug show that it damages the nerves that release serotonin, researchers at John Hopkins University have found. The damage occured even with infrequent use and at typical doses of one to two tablets, but the more taken, the more severe the effects, according to the study." I wonder what other drugs cause the same damage. One more reason to stay away from that kind of stuff!       Di

Well, p-Chloroamphetamines and other halogenated amphetamines all produce a profound depletion of serotonin and serotonergic axonal markers (e.g., serotonergic neurons, serotonin transporters, serotonin receptors, and tryptophan hydroxylase among others).  One such infamous drug is/was fenfluramine (Pondimin); the Fen part of Phen-Fen.
