What is 2 mg of Xanax gonna do to me?
Question:
I have to see my doctor in 2 weeks for a rather um uncomfortable exam. Because of my anxiety, he gave me a 2 mg Xanax and told me to take it 30 minutes before my exam. He said it would make me "La La". I am afraid it is not gonna be enough to calm me down, and I won’t be able to go through with the exam. Is this amount of Xanax gonna calm me down a lot? Anyone ever take this much?? Thanks in advance

I am not familiar with your meds history but if you have never taken Xanax before I think your doctor would have done better if he prescribed you a bit more to see what happens at a different doses. Our response to Xanax is very individual. Some are perfectly happy on .5 mgs, others need 6. Average therapeutic dosage is anywhere between 2-6 mgs. So this is difficult to answer: you may feel fine doing your exam or you may be snoring. Is there a possibility so get some more sdo that you can try .5 mg and 1 mg and then decide how much to take for the exam? Philip

Philip is right….we all react differently to meds. The maxiumum effect with the Xanax probably won’t be reached for an hour, and it wears off pretty well in 3-4 hours. I think your doc is right, the Xanax will make you la-la. LOL. You’ll just feel sleepy, zoned out, spaced…..etc. I feel confident that 2mg of xanax will stop anxiety and block any panic attacks. For me, .50mg would do a fair job. But at time of great stress I’ve taken as many as six .25 tablets and the effect seems to be the same as if I had taken one or two tablets. In other words, it seems like I can take a ton or a little and as soon as my brain gets what it needs, the rest of the Xanax goes to waste. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar feeling about it. I’ve never taken so much that I couldn’t function and I’ve taken quite a bit from time to time. The only thing that I’ve noticed is that if I stop and sit still……z-z-z-z-z. And it’s almost impossible to wake up!! I can’t seem to force myself awake. so as long as I keep moving I’m ok. If you have any fears or reservations about your doctor’s recommendations, which I’m sure he based on your age, weight, and past medical history, call and ask him or your pharmacist about it, or call the doctor’s nurse. And don’t forget, fear of taking medications is symptomatic of people with anxiety disorders. Hope this helps KC Cindy

I completely agree with Philip that it would be great if you could test your milage so to speak before the exam. My doc gave me a 5mg valium for an MRI this past week. What a joke! Having little previous experience with drugs like this I trusted her opinion that this would do this trick. I had two panic attacks before I even got to the MRI room and the valium might as well have been a Flintstone’s chewable for all the good it did. I was unable to go through with the test. See if your doc will let you experiment. Cyndi

I could go to the gallows without a fuss with 2 mg of Xanax in me. My advice as a long-time user, is to take 1 mg 2 hours before and the second mg one hour before if you feel like you need more help. But have someone available to drive you there and back, because Xanax can make you sleep like a baby, even on the expressway.

That’s 2-6mg in a *day*, not in a single *dose!* When I was not taking an antidepressant, I would use 2mg of Xanax as needed for panic attacks (now I rarely have them and it requires less). It works well, but I think it might be sedating for some people. Also, this might just be me, but lately I’ve noticed that I get the munchies after I use it. The first time I took Xanax was 1mg before one of those uncomfortable procedures. It worked well, but then, I don’t get really anxious about that sort of thing. Oh, and of course, *don’t* drive after you’ve taken it. One thing you could do is call the office of the doctor who prescribed it and tell the doctor (or a nurse who works with him/her), about your concerns. Something you might be able to do is get a larger prescription, as people suggest, so you can experiment a little beforehand (e.g., taking it in the evening and seeing what works for you). Don’t be *too* surprised if all you get is some reassuring words, though – some doctors hate prescribing this stuff.
Good luck…I hope it goes well. -elizabeth

Wow, I’ve never taken more than .25mg of xanax. I usually take half of that. I’m trying to start highway driving soon and wish I could be confident that I could take enough xanax to calm me down, but not too much that I fall asleep at the wheel.

I took 5 mg Xanax one hour before an MRI two years ago; it was of minimal help Sometimes you just have to remember to breathe and talk with the med-tech. MRI’s are used to this anyway
